A quick de-stress facial massage

As we go through the hectic holiday season, it's important to take time for ourselves. Even if you only have five minutes, grab your favorite facial oil, sit back, and follow these tips for a de-stressing facial massage - or if your lucky, have sometime do it for you!

  • Forehead Wrinkle Release. Using your fingertips, lightly press into the forehead and glide toward your temples. Firmly press then release.
  • Revitalize Eyes. Press between brows. Then, slide your index fingers around the brow bone and under eyes making an "S" shape between the brows. Firmly press bridge of nose and release.
  • Glow Point Detox. Press and glide between points at sides of nostrils, under cheekbones and front of ears. Make sure to stop and press at each of these pressure points.
  • Jawline Stress Release. Using small, upward circles massage your jawline beginning at the chin. Make sure to press at points below the ears, then glide down to the neck and collarbone.

Caffeine! You consume it in your coffee, tea, trendy "boost" drinks, but is it really worth putting it on your skin.  The research verdict is still out, but there's enough evidence to consider it as a safe and effective skin care ingredient.

Caffeine is a strong antioxidant.  Antioxidants help protect the skin from UV damage so it does slow down the aging process caused by the sun.  This means it can also help prevent the initial onset of wrinkles.  So, caffeine may be best considered as prevention.

Caffeine is also used in many eye creams to perk up the skin around the eyes.  It works as a "vasoconstrictor" - narrowing the blood vessels and calming the skin.  This helps to reduce under-eye puffiness.Unfortunately, the results are short term.  While caffeine is soothing and anti-inflammatory, you would need to use it everyday to see any long term effects.  This is seen most often by persons with rosacea - many report good improvement over time.

There's also another skin care product that uses caffeine...as a cellulite reducer.  This started when beauty editors were expounding the benefits of rubbing coffee grounds on affected areas.  What little research  there is says caffeine might be a little helpful.  As well as restricting blood vessels, it may be capable of stimulating the enzymes that break down fat.

Is there a down side caffeine in a skin care product?  There can be a "rebound" effect.  Just like when you try to cut down on your caffeine intake, you may experience a "caffeine headache", if your skin is especially sensitive or you use a large amount of caffeine on your skin daily, narrowing of blood vessels, when you stop, you may see even more redness.  In eye creams and lotions, the amount of caffeine used is so small, this rebound effect is unlikely, however, in cellulite creams there can be a high amount, so use caution.

Try Hair Powder for Volume, Structure and More!

Have you ever tried a hair powder? Hair powder is a potent problem solver when hair is limp or does not have enough grip for up-dos, twirls or braids. As a welcome side-effect volumizing powder also freshens up oily hair between shampoos. The ultra-light and fine powder is suitable for any hair type and length, and it helps with many hair problems.

Volume: The main role of powder is to add fullness and bounce to thin or limp hair. Simply apply it where more volume is needed. Volumizing micro-particles fluff up hair for added volume without teasing and blow-drying. There is no faster way to turn limp, lifeless hair into a full head of impressively bouncy hair.

Structure and Shape: Powder adds definition to your hairstyle. Hairstyles from bobs to up-dos look fuller and therefore also shapelier.

Hold: Hairstyles hold their shapes better and longer thanks to the powers of a volumizing powder. Hair accessories, slides, and pins also stay in place longer.

Manageability: The hair’s manageability determines how well you can create the desired hairstyles. Hair can be styled much easier in the presence of volumizing powder. Especially twirled and braided hair elements are easier to manage with the volumizing micro-particles in your hair.

Freshness: Volumizing powder absorbs oil and therefore counteracts the bedraggled look of oily hair. Your hair will look fresher in seconds.

Matte Finish: You may also like to use volumizing powder to create a matte finish for undone looks. The powder works well for the cool out-of-bed look for men and undone bobs for women.

How to apply hair powder:
Volumizing is applied where it is needed either near the hair roots or around the hair ends. Simply sprinkle a small amount of volumizing powder on the desired portion of your hair and use your fingers to distribute the powder thoroughly. Alternatively, you may like to distribute the powder in the palms of your hands or on your fingers and work it through the targeted part of your hair. The powder does not need to be brushed out of the hair.

Holiday Make-up Tricks

Want to glam up the make-up for a holiday party or just look gorgeous for Santa.  Here are a few tips that will help without breaking the bank!

  • Add some new color to your eyes.  The holidays is a great time for a more adventurous look.  If your pencil is normally black or brown try a navy color.  If your eyes are blue, go for maroon.  Bronze is perfect for green eyes.
  • Buy some false lashes, the ones that come in individual clumps.  This will give you enough to last through the holidays.  To easily apply, use tweezers to remove them from the package, dip the stem in the lash glue, and apply one or two clumps on the outer edges of each eye.  Gorgeously fuller, eye-framing lashes!
  • Add a little more volume to your lips.  Just apply your normal lip color, then use a clear glitter gloss and place a few dots in the center of the top and bottom lip.  The glitter causes light to refract on the fuller part of your lips and makes them appear fuller.
  • Even if you usually use powder blush, ditch it in favor of a cream-based blush for the holiday season. Cream blushes create a more natural flush and won’t aggravate dried-out skin. Look for a bright, sheer color that blends well for the best results.
  • Use one of your shimmery eyeshadows to make your cheeks look even brighter.  Try a white, shimmery eyeshadow to highlight your cheekbones. Sweep the shadow over the tops of your cheekbones with a fan brush, then dust a bit on your brow bone and the bow of your lips for a glowing finish.

Easy Holiday Nails that look Goregous!

Need a simple, but beautiful idea for your holiday nails.  This one is great!  Although it is shown in green and red, you could do yellow and brown for thanksgiving or do a silver and gold effect for any occasion.  We used Zoya Nail Polish in Ivanka (green) and Pixie Dust Oswin (red) and white.

Begin with a clear coat (or any very pale nude color) and paint the nail.  Let dry.

At the tip, paint on the red in a triangular shape with the base of the triangle being at the side of the nail.  Let dry.

Paint the green next, starting at the opposite side to where you started your red color.  Paint so it starts wide and narrows as it moves across the tip.  It should be very narrow at the far side from where you started.

Clean up the top edge by adding a stripe of white.  Then add a clear top coat to seal it all.

Body Exfoliation - Essential in Winter

Skin feeling more like sandpaper?  Got the itchies? Cold weather, heavy clothing and dry heating can take a toll on more than just your face.  All of your skin can feel it.  Doing a full body exfoliation each week will leave your skin with a much more youthful glow and help eliminate those dry patches and ugly little skin bumps.  Below is step-by-step instructions to get the most benefit from your efforts.
  1. Apply oil to skin.  Cover all skin lightly with an oil like Earthly Body Hemp Seed Glow Oil which is a spray so it's easy to cover hard to reach places. Moroccanoil's Dry Body Oil is also a good one.
  2. Take a dry brush to skin from the feet up, brushing in short, light strokes.  Yes, that long-handled, soft bristled brush that comes with bath sets and hangs in your shower actually has a function.  Just don't hang it in the shower...use it dry.
  3. Step in the shower and, using a body scrub, start at the feet again and massage the skin in a circular motion on up the body.
  4. Rinse off using lukewarm water, then apply a salicylic acid body wash to skin  paying more attention to heels, elbows and knees. If you have a tendency towards back and butt acne, make sure to apply there as well.
  5. Pat skin dry and apply your favorite moisturizer while skin is slightly damp.

BEAUTY SCIENCE: Eucalyptus oil

Eucalyptus oil is oil distilled from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree (Eucalyptus globulus). The tree is known for its fast growth, making eucalyptus oil a sustainable ingredient. The leaves are dried, crushed, and distilled to release the essential oil. After the oil has been extracted, it must be diluted before it can be used in products. The Eucalyptus tree is native to Australia; it is now grown all around the world! Eucalyptus oil has antimicrobial, antifungal, and herbicidal properties. It is also said that Eucalyptus oil can improve the overall health of your hair by stimulating the hair follicles promoting hair growth. It also relieves itchy scalp and treat head lice!
Originating in Australia,
the Eucalyptus tree has spread around the world.
Koala's have made them their home and food source.
Do they know something

Eucalyptus oil has anti-inflammatory properties. Although not proven by clinical research, advocates of eucalyptus oil for hair believe that the oil can help reduce scalp inflammation to create an ideal environment for hair growth. Eucalyptus also helps dry up blemishes and acne outbreaks, reducing inflammation and pain. The oil's anti-bacterial properties also help reduce the chance of future outbreaks, who doesn’t love that!

Eucalyptus is believed to have a number of medicinal properties, although not all of them have been confirmed yet by research. In the late 19th century, eucalyptus oil was used in most hospitals in England to clean urinary catheters. It is also believed to help with colds and respiratory symptoms. Herbal remedies recommend using fresh leaves in a gargle to relieve a sore throat, sinusitis, and bronchitis. Also, eucalyptus oil vapor can be used as a decongestant when inhaled.

Do you suffer from muscle and joint pain? Eucalyptus may help! Pure eucalyptus extract may act as a pain reliever, and research indicates that the oil may have analgesic (pain relieving) properties. It is a common ingredient in a lot of CBD products because of this.

Other conditions that eucalyptus may help with include:
  • Arthritis - potentially due to its anti-inflammatory properties
  • A blocked nose
  • Wounds and burns
  • Ulcers
  • Cold sores - perhaps due to its anti-inflammatory properties
  • Bladder diseases
  • Diabetes - eucalyptus might help lower blood sugar
  • Fever and Flu symptoms
Eucalyptus products can generally be used safely on the skin, as long as the oil is diluted. It should not be applied directly onto the skin until it is diluted with a carrier oil, such as olive oil. The dilution should be between 1 percent and 5 percent eucalyptus oil to between 95 percent and 99 percent carrier oil; this equates to roughly one to five drops of essential oil in an ounce of carrier oil. Eucalyptus can produce irritation and a burning sensation. If you have sensitive skin, we suggest trying a patch test before use. Still with all of these wonderful (and sustainable) benefits we highly recommend looking for eucalyptus globulus leaf oil in your ingredient list!

BEAUTY SCIENCE: Snail Essence (Mucin)

Snail Essence remains a hot ingredient in skin care because it is full of good nutrients and leaves skin with a dewy glow.  But don't go out after a rain and start wiping up those snail trails.  It needs to be processed and companies that sell snail essence keep their procedures proprietary.  You can go collect a couple of snails and let them crawl across your face, but...eeeew!

So, what exactly is it?  It's that mucin emitted by the snail as it moves along the ground as a way to protect itself.  The common garden snail (Cryptomphalus aspera) is most often used.  Snail farmers put snails over a mesh in dark room.  They are left there for 30-40 minutes to roam around excreting their slime, then put back in their usual home.  The mucin from the mesh is then collected.  There are many ways of then processing the mucin to make it stable for skin care.

So, why is it so popular?  Snail essence has been used in various parts of the world for centuries.  In ancient Greece through the middle ages it was used as a skin inflammation treatment.   More recently, it was popularized by Korean skin care products as it is purported to be hydrating, helps prevent aging skin and improves wrinkles and scars.  The ingredients in the slime are hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein enzymes and peptides.  These ingredients are also found in many other skin products.

Winter Skin Rash

It's dry, it's itchy, it may be red or flaking, there may be rough, scaly patches. It happens most often when climate changes.  Winter skin rash can normally be treated at home with some simple steps.  However, if the rash becomes painful or these steps do not help, consult your doctor.

Winter rash strikes when the skin loses too much moisture.  Winter's cold, dry air and central heating can literally suck moisture from the skin.  Winter rash most often appears on the hands and feet, but in can occur anywhere on the body.

What can you do?
  • First and foremost, moisturize often using skin care products that contain urea or lactic acid. Apply moisturizer after taking a shower while skin is still damp.
  • Avoid fragranced skin care products.  These may contain harsh chemical that further irritate the skin.
  • Natural products like aloe vera gel and coconut oil both contain antibacterial properties, as well as being moisturizing and both are safe to use on cracked skin.
    • Coconut oil can also improve the skin's barrier function.
    • Avoid olive oil.  Although it has anti-inflammatory properties, it promotes water loss in the skin.
    • Avocado oil has vitamin C, D, and E.  These are especially nourishing for dry skin.
  • Avoid harsh soaps.  Avoid cleansers and body washes that contain alcohols, parabens or synthetic dyes.
  • Turn down the heat.  Just a couple of degrees can make a difference.
  • Keep a humidifier running.  This can offset the dryness of the heated air.
  • Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.  Drink lots of water.
