BEAUTY SCIENCE: Retinol

This is a very popular skin care ingredient; but what is it and how does it work? Retinol is a yellow compound found in green and yellow vegetables, egg yolk, and fish-liver oil. It is essential for growth and vision in dim light. It is a form of Vitamin A which promotes skin renewal and enhances collagen production. Retinoid receptors are proteins naturally found in skin. BEAUTY SCIENCE: Fragrance

The word "fragrance" on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals and ingredients used as fragrance dispersants such as diethyl phthalate. Beauty companies have to use the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) when listing what’s in a product. This standardized book of ingredient names means that lavandula angustifolia (lavender extract) is always lavandula angustifolia, regardless of whether a company thinks theirs is better, exotic, or magical. However, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) exempts "fragrance" from having to be more specific, even though it might contain synthetic, preservative, or allergy-provoking substances that you might want to know about. It's a "catch-all" word, allowed by the FDA, for manufacturers to protect their "secret formulas."

Make-up was easy in our teens and 20's, but as laugh lines start to appear, using the same make-up routine may make you look older.  Just as your skin care routine must change as you age, so should your make-up.  Time dries and thins our facial skin, so the products you used five years ago could look matronly now.

Start your new make-up routine with a high-quality skin primer.  It fills in small wrinkles, making them less visible.  If you haven't ever used one, you will notice the difference right away.  Try Veil Foundation Primer by Bodyography.

Caring for a child's hair - Simple Do's and Don'ts

Ever wondered what the difference is between regular and baby shampoo?  Adult shampoos contain chemicals called anionic (like ammonium laurel sulfate) that create the lather most people want when they shampoo.  This can be very drying, but since most adults use conditioner and other styling products and have oilier skin than kids, it's not an issue. Be shampoo savvy when it comes to caring for infant and toddler hair washing.
