Cellulite...Minimize and Camoflage!

Swimsuit time!  There are a lots of things to love about summer, but the fact that your cellulite is on display is certainly not one of them.  The first time you don you suit for the summer is always the day you notice every little body flaw (both real and perceived).  And cellulite tops the list, and it sucks!  Cellulite is genetic, chances are if your Mom has it, you do too!

Cheer up! 93% of women have cellulite, so you are not alone.  There are ways to minimize the bubbly look.  First and second are a healthy diet and regular exercise.  They are naturally tops on the "looking your best" of every beauty and health article. But, below, we have some other tips:

  • Massage your cellulite trouble spots.  Using a soap with little nubs or a nubby massager, this stimulates circulations and breaks up the fluids beneath your skin so it appears smoother.
  • Use a ground coffee exfoliant.  Cosmopolitan  recommend LaLicious Extraordinary Whipped Sugar Coffee Scrub.  It works in two ways - massaging the scrub into the skin stimulates lymphatic drainage and coffee contains caffeine with temporarily tightens skin.  LaLicious also contains sweet almond oil to plump & hydrate the skin.
  • Use a Self-Tanner.  If you can't tone it, tan it!  There is no true cure for cellulite, the fastest fix to camouflage lumpy skin.  Slather it on to disguise your dimples in a flash!  Fake Bake's Lipo Bronze Self-Tan Lotion with Anti-Cellulite is perfect for this!

Expert tips for long, lush lashes!

Long, luscious lashes are a cosmetic necessity. Applying mascara effectively is essential to full, natural looking eyelashes.  Follow these five rules to get perfect eyelashes.

  • Eyelash curlers are essential. Lash curlers are the key to giving lashes that “wow” factor. Be sure to choose one that creates a beautiful upward curl (ToolWorx has a great one!). With a delicate pumping motion, move from the lash base upward for maximum results. Always curl before applying mascara, not after. When bare, the eyelashes are suppler so the crimping of the lash isn't as damaging.
  • Let lashes set between layers of mascara.  Practice a little patience between each coat. Giving a little bit of air time between each coat will allow the mascara to set and build upon each layer instead of gooping up as one big clump.
  • Prevent “spider lashes” with a lash comb.  Avoid spidery clumps by combing lashes after applying mascara.  A metal-toothed lash comb is key; apply a coat, wait a few seconds, brush through eyelashes, and then apply the next coat. Mehaz Retractable Eyelash Comb is perfect if you don't have one.
  • Don’t layer different mascaras.  Some formulas will not mix well and end up clumping However, some mixing and matching does work. If there’s a wand you prefer over another, clean it off and use with your favorite formula or as a lash comb.
  • Condition and treat your lashes daily.  Just like your hair, your lashes need a little TLC. Lash conditioners work as a primer, creating a smooth surface for mascara. Growth treatments stimulate the eyelash growth cycle, making it longer, so lashes come in longer, darker and thicker. Full results take 2-3 months, while improvements show within 4 weeks. gloMinerals, Ardel and Babe all have great conditioners.

Skin Care - Finding the right ingredient(s) for what you need!

Choosing a skin care product that will accomplish what you want it to can be a little overwhelming...especially when you look at the ingredients list.  Below is a list of the most common ingredients.

Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

Alpha-hydroxy acids include glycolic, lactic, tartaric, malic, and citric acids. They have become increasingly popular over the last 20 years. In the U.S. alone, there are over 200 makers of skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids.  Creams and lotions with alpha-hydroxy acids may help with fine lines, irregular pigmentation, and age spots. Side effects of alpha-hydroxy acids include mild irritation and sun sensitivity.

Beta-Hydroxy Acid (Salicylic Acid)

Salicylic acid exfoliates skin and can improve its texture and color. It also helps with acne.
Many skin care products contain salicylic acid. Some are available over-the-counter and others require a doctor's prescription. Studies have shown that salicylic acid is less irritating than skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids but has similar results in improving skin texture and color.
Warning: People who are allergic to salycylates (found in aspirin) should not use products containing salicylic acid. Salicylic acid can be absorbed into the bloodstream and may cause an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis. Pregnant or nursing women should not use products containing salicylic acid.

Hydroquinone

Skin care products containing hydroquinone are often called bleaching creams or lightening agents. These skin care products are used to lighten hyperpigmentation, such as age spots and dark spots related to pregnancy or hormone therapy (also called melasma).  Some over-the-counter skin care products contain hydroquinone. Your doctor can also prescribe a product with a higher concentration of hydroquinone if your skin doesn't respond to over-the-counter treatments. If you are allergic to hydroquinones, you can use products containing kojic acid instead. Pregnant women cannot use hydroquinone.

Kojic Acid

Kojic acid is a more recent remedy for treating pigment problems and age spots. First developed in 1989, kojic acid has a similar effect as hydroquinone. Kojic acid is made from a fungus, and studies have shown that it is effective at lightening skin.

Retinol

Retinol is made from vitamin A, and it's in many non-prescription skin care products. Retinol's stronger counterpart is tretinoin, which is the active ingredient in Retin-A and Renova, available by prescription only.  If your skin is too sensitive to use Retin-A, retinol is an alternative, although the effects are less impressive. Retinol may improve mottled pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, skin texture, and skin tone and color.

You may also hear about retinyl palmitate. This is in the same family as retinol, but if the skin care product you choose contains retinyl palmitate, you will need to use more of this product than one that contains retinol to get the same effect. Pregnant women or nursing mothers cannot use retinol.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps to minimize fine lines, scars, and wrinkles. It's the only antioxidant that is proven to boost production of collagen, which is a key part of skin's structure.  Be choosy when selecting a vitamin C product. Vitamin C in its most commonly found forms is highly unstable when exposed to oxygen, making it useless. Choose one in a tube or a pump. Also, many topical vitamin C preparations do not penetrate the skin enough to make a difference.

Hyaluronic Acid

Skin care products containing hyaluronic acid are often used with vitamin C products to assist in effective penetration.  Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally (and quite abundantly) in people and animals and is found in young skin, other tissues, and joint fluid.  Hyaluronic acid is part of the body's connective tissues, and is known to cushion and lubricate. Aging destroys hyaluronic acid. Diet and smoking can also affect your body's level of hyaluronic acid over time.  Skin care products with hyaluronic acid are most frequently used to treat wrinkled skin although they don't replace anything the body has naturally lost. These are very effective moisturizers.

Copper Peptide

Studies have shown that copper peptide promotes the production of collagen and elastin in your skin. It also acts as an antioxidant and promotes production of glycosaminoglycans (such as hyaluronic acid).  Studies have also shown that copper-dependent enzymes help firm, smooth, and soften the skin quicker than most other anti-aging skin care products. In addition, copper peptides have been shown to remove damaged collagen and elastin from the skin and scar tissue.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-lipoic acid diminishes fine lines, gives skin a healthy glow, and boosts levels of other antioxidants, such as vitamin C.   Alpha-lipoic acid can enter all parts of a skin cell. Due to this quality, it is believed that alpha-lipoic acid can provide more protection than other antioxidants against so-called free radicals that can damage skin.

DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol)

The brain makes DMAE. DMAE in skin care products shows minimal effects at best when applied on skin for the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.

Pretty, soft and kiss-able lips!

Our lips take a lot of abuse but we often forget to protect them like we do our other skin.  Lips have no oil or sweat glands and we are constantly exposing them to things that irritate...like spicy foods, citric acids, hot drinks, etc.  Plus, during the summer we go from dry, heated air to cold frigid air and back.  We are also our own worst enemy to our lips when we "lick" our lips.  Saliva evaporates quickly, so while it may feel good, licking your lips can make them drier than before and the enzymes that help your saliva clean your mouth and digest good are much too harsh for your lips.

So what do you do if your lips are feeling dry or chapped to get them kiss-ably soft and keep them that way?  First, you should exfoliate your lip area once per week.  Don't use a harsh scrub.  There are gentle lip scrubs that are made just for this area. Jane Iredale's Sugar & Butter Lip Exfoliator and Plumper is a very good one.  It's a dual ended tube...so you get both products in one!  If your lips are aging a bit, give Instantly Ageless Sugar Lip Scrub by Jeunesse a try. It also helps diminish fine lines around the mouth.

Next, use a lip balm that has a base of beeswax, petroleum jelly or paraffin.  These seal in moisture and won't evaporate as quickly as thinner balms or glosses.  Use the balm often, expecially if you are out in the wind and cold.  Always apply it at bedtime!  If your lips are extremely irritated, aloe vera is great.  Don't forget the need for sunscreen even in winter!  Suavecito Lip Balm has a beeswax base and is only $3.00.  Another good beeswax based balm, Body Drench Lip Drench comes in six "flavors" ($4.00).  If you want a little color, try gloMineral Protecting Lip Treatment SPF 15

Increase your SPF protection with Vitamin C

Most dermatologists recommend
using vitamin C under your sunscreen.
Power up on the antioxidants with
Ole Henricksen's POWER Bright system;
it’s bursting with a vitamin C
concentrate of 25 percent.
Sun protection — Slathering copious amounts of a broad spectrum sunscreen every day, whether rain or shine, is our best defense against those harsh solar rays. It needs to be reapplied it every two hours, especially when spending hours outdoors. But did you know that to get the most out of your sunscreen, you should pair it with a powerful antioxidant like vitamin C?

Sun damage is an oxidative process. UV rays and other environmental stressors like pollution and cigarette smoke cause the release of damaging free radicals. Free radicals lead to premature signs of aging, but vitamin C neutralizes them and helps shield your skin from this damage, keeping your complexion healthy and vibrant.

Vitamin C does not work as a barrier to UV rays, but once rays enter the skin, it is a potent antioxidant that slows the rate of free radical damage to collagen and aids in skin repair by factors linked to reduced oxidation damage to the skin cells’ DNA.    It also reverses photo-aging, evens pigmentation and decreases fine lines by stimulating collagen production. If you’re at risk for deeper sun damage using a topical formulation that teams vitamin C with vitamin E (an antioxidant known to reduce inflammation and help speed healing) can provide additional benefits.  As a serum, they have been shown to enhance the function of SPF formulations when used in combination, reducing the incidence of sunburns and increasing the SPF’s stability.

Bangs or NO Bangs

If you are considering updating your style by cutting bangs, stop for a moment!  While bangs can be high maintenance and while hair does grow back, the grow out process can be painful. On the other hand, bangs can make your style more dramatic, draw attention to fabulous eyes or be very flirty and cute.  Here are four tips before you or your hairdresser grab the shears:

Bangs require extra work each day.  Bangs are not for those who are style lazy. If you've got your style down to a 3-minute routine, adding bangs will change things a bit.  Bangs need to be styled everyday if they are to look great.

Bangs need to be trimmed at least once every three weeks to keep them and your style looking like you intended.  Many hairdressers will trim bangs for free if you are as regular client (but don't forget to tip for this service).

You might want to try a starter bang at first.  Side-swept bangs are versatile and much easier to style, plus they look great on almost any face.  The advantage of this is to help you decide if bang maintenance is for you and they are easier to grow out if you decide you don't want bangs.

Invest in dry shampoo.  The oils from your face and fingertips are going to make your bangs limp and greasy long before your next shampoo.  A good dry-shampoo can work wonders to soak up those oils and refresh your bangs!

Ten little beauty tips you may not know!

Freeze Your Eyeliner
Does your eyeliner constantly crumble while putting it on? Leave it in the freezer for 15 minutes prior to applying your makeup. It should glide along your lash line seamlessly after that.

Shave With Conditioner
If you're out of shaving cream, lather your legs with conditioner instead of soap. Conditioner will soften the hair on your legs making it easier to shave (and it will leave your skin feeling extra silky).

Use Ice Cubes To Keep Fat, Acne And Wrinkles At Bay
Skin experts recommend massaging an ice cube over your face until it melts. Do it every night before bed and keep fat cells, acne and wrinkles under control.

De-Puff Your Eyes With Raw Potatoes
Use raw potato slices to soothe your eyes. She says they are astringent which means they help decrease water retention and they also contain the enzyme catalase which helps lighten dark under eye circles. First, wash and peel a potato. Cut two slices and place one on each eye for 10 minutes. Lay down, relax and let the potatoes work their magic. Rinse the eye area gently with lukewarm water when you're done.

Create Fuller Lips
If you're tired of having thin, pursed puckers, extend your lip line using a neutral-toned lip liner. Then apply lipstick over top. Be careful though — don't extend your lip line too much.

Microwave Lotion Into Luxury
Who doesn't love a spa day? If we could go every day, we probably would, but that would also put a dent in our wallets. A quick, easy and cheaper indulgence is to put your favorite lotion in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Make sure the oils in your lotion don't separate and that it isn't too hot. Apply it on to your skin and enjoy!

Tweezing Tips
Before you tweeze, make sure you soften your skin by dabbing a cotton ball soaked in warm water or cream. When you start tweezing, do so in the direction of your hair's growth.

Clarify Your Hair
In order to remove product build-up from locks, use a clarifying shampoo once a week. This will also help prevent dandruff and other annoying hair/scalp conditions.

Don't Pump Your Mascara
You should never pump your mascara (i.e., moving the wand up and down in the tube really quickly) because it will only allow air into the tube which will cause your mascara to dry (and ultimately shorten its lifespan).

Apply Sunscreen Daily
Wear sunscreen every day, rain or shine. Even when it's cloudy.  80 per cent of the sun's ultraviolet rays pass through the clouds.

Glowing skin! Your face is more youthful in one week!

Skin been looking a bit dull and tired lately?  It may be in need of a little extra special attention. A busy week full of family and work demands may make a adding a little to your skin care routine seem impossible, but I promise it will be worth it.  Worthwhile skin care results do not always have to require a ton of time. And, if you’re already cleansing and moisturizing daily – which, you really should be – then you may not be that far off from having beautiful, glowing skin. Just make a few simple changes to your skin care routine.

Change #1:  Magnify your skin cleansing efforts with a cleanser containing glycolic acid.  Glycolic acid is the smallest of the alpha hydroxyl acids and works to exfoliate dullness and impurities.  This improves skin tone, texture and clarity.  Your skin will be visibly brighter.  Products to try:  Yonka Essentials Lait Nettoyant or Fran Wilson Retinol X Anti-aging Cleanser.

Change #2:  Moisturize with a glow enhancer.  Regular hydration can help prevent skin-dryness, which causes skin to look dull and lackluster, as well as deter common signs of skin aging like fine lines and wrinkles.  If you also use one with an SPF, your skin will not only be radiant, but also protected.  Products to try:  Natural Finish Face Bronzer by Bodyography

Change #3:  This is the only step that requires a little more time!  Three nights a week, after cleansing and before moisturizing, add a clay mask to give your skin a boost.  Apply and leave on for 10 minutes and rinse away.  Then apply your moisturizer.  Clay masks detoxify and refine skin.  Products to try:  Malibu C Facial Masque Algae Clay or BioElements Restorative Clay.

June Travel Series: Desination: Unknown!

Grab a plane, hop a train, take a road trip!  We've spent the last five days writing about great destinations and ideas for take-along products.  Hopefully, you've found at least a couple of great ideas or helpful products.

But, what about those of you who haven't yet made plans or who like spur of the moment or last minute deals to determine your destination?  So totally fun and exciting!  We'll we've got that covered too!  Let's put together a "Go" bag...just a few essentials that are ready when you are!  You may love being spontaneous, but a little "ready for anything" preparedness will make it much easier.

So find a small tote and let's fill it!  First, on the outside, tape on a note that says "don't forget medications!"  I once had to turn around after 3 hours of driving because I did forget. It would have been worse if I had been on a plane.  So, if you need prescription medication, make it a big, bold note.

Next in the bag are the personal products and the SPF.  Dermalogica Defense Protection 50 Sport is a good one as it is both cares for your skin and has long-lasting protection. Plus it's 40 minutes water resistant.  And, since it seems everyone forgets the toothbrush...a Violife SlimSonic Destinations toothbrush is both fun and hygienic!

Now you need a brush, comb and travel sizes of your favorite hair care products - shampoo, conditioner, hairspray and styling products.  If your brand doesn't have the travel sizes, Pureology Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner are a great choice and come in 1.7 oz. sizes. DermOrganic has the perfect travel set with all TSA approved sizes of shampoo, conditioner, repair and leave-in in a zipper tote.  So does Moroccanoil with its Instant Boost Travel Essentials Kit. Keep you hair in order with Kenra Volume Spray 25, which comes in a 1.5 oz. size.

Amika has a great Dual-Voltage Travel Dryer kit.  Since you don't know where you might end up, this is just right for your go bag!

Now for the rest of the family!  If your adventure includes them, you can add Goldwell Dualsenses for Men Travel Bag.  You know he always forgets something or relies on you to pack, so be the grooming hero and have it ready.  Is your spontaneous adventure likely to include kids.  Then Original Spout's Travel Trio is also ready to go with it's soy, honey, peanut, dairy and gluten free products.

Whatever you do this summer...whatever your final destination...have a wonderful, relaxing time!

Pravana Nevo Moisture Rich Shampoo & conditioner.  All those elements you love so much can take a big toll on your hair.  After a night around the smoky campfire and a day in the sun, you head for the creek to wash off the day.  I love the feel of the water at dusk!  Well dunk that head and wash your hair with Pravana Nevo.  Not only is it natural and sulfate free, even the packaging is bio-degradable.  So you can shampoo & condition, put the moisture back in your hair and not have to worry you are harming the environment or the fishes!

Absolutely your best friend is a natural sunscreen.  You need to apply it every morning and keep applying it throughout the day.  Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics has just the thing for your face.  Celazome Moisturzing Sunscreen SPF 30.  It is non-comedogenic, fragrance free, PABA free and overs 80 minutes waterproof protection!

As kids crawl out of their sleeping bags, you cringe at the tangled bed heads.  They've played hard, slept hard and are charged and ready for another day.  But, you do want them to start the day looking like your cherished babies and not a bedraggled orphan.  Here's where Original Sprout's Miracle Detangler becomes your best friend.  Just spray it on and brush or comb through.  Tangles disappear!

There's another kid essential I love for camping.  The Rockee Toothbrush!  Out camping, as soon as the sun is up, so are the kids.  Once you corral them for breakfast, give their hair a lick and a promise, it's time for them to brush their teeth!  They usually do this as fast as possible, tossing the toothbrush toward the table as they run off to play.  That's why Rockee!  No matter where the toothbrush lands, it wobbles to an upright position!  No more toothbrush heads landing on germ-ridded table or in the dirt!  Love it!

If your outdoor adventure includes a visit to the local hangout one evening or a group BBQ, the CHI Escape is your best friend!  This cordless, rechargeable flat iron gets your campers hair looking great in just a few minutes.

Finally, the essential camping product.  It's inevitable that cuts, scrapes and a touch of sunburn will get someone in your group.  Mirabella's Sun After Sun Aloe Gel is hypoallergenic, alcohol and paraben free and will soothe those minor irritations quickly.
