Soft, kissable lips by Valentine's Day!

Our lips take a lot of abuse but we often forget to protect them like we do our other skin.  Lips have no oil or sweat glands and we are constantly exposing them to things that irritate...like spicy foods, citric acids, hot drinks, etc.  Plus, during the winter we go from dry, heated air to cold frigid air and back.  We are also our own worst enemy to our lips when we "lick" our lips.  Saliva evaporates quickly, so while it may feel good, licking your lips can make them drier than before and the enzymes that help your saliva clean your mouth and digest good are much too harsh for your lips.

So what do you do if your lips are feeling dry or chapped to get them kiss-ably soft and keep them that way?  First, you should exfoliate your lip area once per week.  Don't use a harsh scrub.  There are gentle lip scrubs that are made just for this area. Jane Iredale's Sugar & Butter Lip Exfoliator and Plumper is a very good one.  It's a dual ended tube...so you get both products in one!  If your lips are aging a bit, give Instantly Ageless Sugar Lip Scrub by Jeunesse a try. It also helps diminish fine lines around the mouth.

Next, use a lip balm that has a base of beeswax, petroleum jelly or paraffin.  These seal in moisture and won't evaporate as quickly as thinner balms or glosses.  Use the balm often, expecially if you are out in the wind and cold.  Always apply it at bedtime!  If your lips are extremely irritated, aloe vera is great.  Don't forget the need for sunscreen even in winter!  Suavecito Lip Balm has a beeswax base and is only $3.00.  Another good beeswax based balm, Body Drench Lip Drench comes in six "flavors" ($4.00).

So...the plan for enticing lips by February 14...exfoliate each week and use lip balm each morning before applying lip color and each night at bedtime.  Use more often if your lips are feeling especially chapped or dry.  AND, no more licking your lips!

Trim your bangs the right way!

If you have bangs, then you know how fast they seem to grow!  While the rest of your hair may not yet need a visit to your hairdresser, your bangs always seem to be in need of a trim.  Here's the best way to make the needed repair to your hairdo yourself.

Step 1: Start with clean, dry hair, styled as you usually wear it.
Step 2: Gently grasp a section of hair between your fingers (don't pull!). If your bangs go straight across, keep your fingers horizontal. If they are more slanted, your fingers should be at an angle, too.
Step 3: Use cuticle scissors to allow yourself more control. That way, you won't be able to accidentally chop off a huge chunk of hair in one swipe.
Step 4: Do not cut across your forehead horizontally with the scissors. Hold the scissors vertically, and cut into the bangs. Your hair will look softer this way.
Step 5: Snip no more than a quarter-inch at a time. (You can always trim more later.)
Step 6: Start at the center of your forehead and trim outward until you reach the middle of your right eyebrow, then stop. Repeat on the other side. Avoid cutting past your eyebrows—many women have cowlicks in these areas, and if you're one of them, you could end up with a "hole" in your bangs.

The Amazing Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been used for centuries as a beauty aid.  So many beauty products list coconut oil in their ingredients.  Ever wondered why?  It's because it's not only nourishing to hair and skin, but has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal benefits as well.  Plus, it's a wallet-friendly, all natural product!

Used on your hair:
Conditioner: Whether applied at room temperature or heated up, letting your hair soak in coconut oil for a few hours will deep condition your hair, i.e. make it look and feel way healthier, as it's rich with vitamin E, vitamin K, and iron.
Anti-Frizz Potion: By lightly finger-combing it through your hair from the ears down, it can help tame frizz without making it look greasy—just keep it away from your roots.
Shine Creator: While hair serums can be packed with silicone, unrefined coconut oil will give your hair a natural sheen. Use it as a mask or as an intensive hair conditioner.
Cleaning Machine: As gross as it is to think about, the fact is our scalp and hair have a higher bacterial content than we'd like to acknowledge. Fortunately, coconut oil contains anti-fungal/antibacterial properties that make it serve as a protective barrier.

Used on Your Skin:
Moisturizer: When applied on the face or body, coconut oil works as an all-natural moisturizer that replenishes the skin's natural oils.
Soothing Balm: Whether applied topically or ingested in precise amounts, it helps to minimize outbreaks and irritation.
Anti-Aging Wonder: Filled with antioxidants that ward off free radicals, it'll help slow the aging process while keeping your skin hydrated—making you soft, supple, and glowing.
Cuticle Oil: Not only will the oil strengthen your nails, but it will also help remedy damaged cuticles and help with foot hygiene (it's an anti-fungal).

Used on your Face:
Highlighter: Once you've applied your makeup, use it as a cheek highlighter as it will enhance your skin's natural pigments and reflect light.
Makeup Remover: Swiping coconut oil over stubborn mascara and eye makeup will take it right off.
Eye Cream: The delicate skin under our eyes is the first place to show signs of wrinkles or fine lines, and it's super hydrating properties prevent these wrinkles, while it's fatty acids work to reinforce your skin's protective barrier.
Lip Moisturizer: Chapped lips are not a good look.  Coconut oil nourishes for a soft pout free of cracks and flakes.

Whiten Yellow Nail Tips

Those dark red polishes look fabulous but can leave behind a yellow tint on your nails when it's removed.  Here's how to get your nail tips looking whiter:

Mix a solution of 1 tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 2 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda in a small plastic bowl.  It should have a paste-like consistency.

Use a cotton swab to press some of the mixture firmly under the tip of each nail as well as over the top of the nail, covering all the nails on one hand.

Allow the mixture to remain in place for about three minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Repeat with other hand!  Try this treatment every six to eight weeks.

Thinning Hair Solutions

The best way to think of the way hair grows is to picture a garden. How well it grows is completely a result of what is happening “underground.”   Like a garden, a normal hair cycle should lead to hair growth. Growth cycles are important because when they go awry, that is one of the reasons we have hair loss.  Things that interfere with the growth cycle -- like medication, illness, infection, or chemicals -- have the potential to stop hair from being formed properly.  Hair grows in three different cycles: anagen, catagen, and telogen. About 90% of the hair on the head is in the anagen, or growth phase, which lasts anywhere from two to eight years. The catagen, or transition phase, typically lasts 2-3 weeks, during which the hair follicle shrinks. During the telogen cycle, which lasts around two to four months, the hair rests.  An overwhelming majority of the time the hair is on the scalp, it is growing. Only about 10% of the strands are in transition or resting at any one time. Hair grows about 6 inches a year for most people.

Most people lose anywhere from 50 to 100 strands of hair each day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. On the days when hair is washed, people can lose up to 250 strands, Roberts said. But don’t avoid washing in an attempt to keep the hair, as it will fall out eventually, anyway.  Typically, each time a normal hair follicle is shed, it is replaced by hair that is equal in size. But in women with female-pattern hair loss, the new hair is finer and thinner. The hair follicles are shrinking and eventually they quit growing altogether.

If you hair loss is sudden or extreme, a visit to your doctor should be your first step.  Preliminary blood work is usually taken to make sure the thyroid gland or an autoimmune disease isn’t the culprit.  The doctor may also ask what your mother, aunts, or grandmothers look like - if they have similar, or greater amounts, of hair loss. Using magnification on the scalp can show if a woman’s follicles vary in size - with some thick and others thin. These are two telltale signs of female pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia.  This is a hereditary condition that affects about 30 million American women, according to the America Academy of Dermatology, and is the most common kind of hair loss.

If you've addressed the medical concerns for hair loss, then there are products that can help you to re-grow hair or minimize the impact and look of thinning hair.  New innovations in hair and scalp care are being introduced and research is ongoing.

What Works?

Bosley Professiona Strength, Nioxin and Joico Clinicure brands all work by improving the condition of the scalp and creating a nourishing environment for hair growth.  Hair follicles are stimulated and re-growth happens with consistent treatment.  X-Fusion uses keratin and hair fibers to give hair a fuller appearance.  This is great for those whose hair loss or thinning is likely temporary due to medication.  Redken's Cerafill both stimulates hair growth by caring for the scalp and adds volume to thinning hair strands.

Snowflakes in a Night Sky...Nail design

It is winter!  Most of us are feeling and cold and this weekend we'll be trapped indoors as mother nature blasts us with wind, rain, snow & ice.  Here's a great, simple-to-do nail design you can do yourself.  So wrap up from winter's cold and let it snow!

Paint each nail a dark blue and let dry.

Using a small nail brush or nail pen, dot on the snow flakes, starting with a few near the nail bed and getting heavier as you move toward the nail tips.  Using both white and silver polishes for your "flakes" will add a big of shine!

Finish by sealing with a clear top coat.

Hair Color Fading - three products for those whose hair color seems to disappear!

If you color your hair, you know that maintaining that "fresh from the salon" color requires extra care.  Most everyone knows to use a shampoo designed for color treated hair, and there are some very good color maintenance shampoos and conditioner.  However, if you are one of those who, no matter how carefully you care for your hair color, it still fades a bit even before your roots are showing, then we've got your answer! There are shampoos and a conditioner that deposit color back into your hair each time you use them and they also are great for your hair!

Tressa Watercolors Color Maintenance Shampoo and Color Boost Conditioners!  There are 13 shades of Shampoo...from Molten Bronze to Wet Brick that will brighten your fading color.  This is a sulfate-free shampoo that cleanses and conditions, plus refreshes your color...all in one easy step.  If you need a bit more conditioning, there are four shades of conditioner.

Alto Bella ClayPac Shampoos & Moisturizers keep colors true and prevents unwanted brassiness, ashiness or odd tones in your hair color. Use Violet to add cool tones to browns and auburns or to reduce yellow tones on red, blonde, or gray hair. Select Red to add red tones and reduce ash tones on brown and red hair. Add warmth and balance cool with Cappuccino.

Pravana Nevo Color Enhancer Treatment is a conditioner that puts life back in your color.  There are five shades that will enhance your color as it conditions your hair.  You can get an even deeper effect by leaving the conditioner on for a few extra minutes.
  • Honey Blonde – enhances golden tones
  • Brilliant Copper – infuses copper or orange tones
  • Radiant Red – deepens and brightens red tones
  • Deep Burgundy – saturates a deep red/violet tone

Take the Hair Moisture Test!

Test your hair to see if it needs moisture or extra moisture:  Take a strand of hair (dry, not wet) and gently pull both ends to stretch it. If it breaks easily, you don't have enough moisture in your hair.

For Medium Hair
Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask
8.5 oz  $35.00
A lot of products say they’re moisturizing on the label. In reality, they might simply coat your hair to make it feel softer. Look for products with natural oils like olive or argan oil, or glycerin, sorbitol, or shea butter. Stay away from shampoos with mineral oil and petrolatum, which keep outside moisture from getting in.

A hair treatment and repair mask should be your first step in repair.  Masks give hair extra-deep moisturizing benefits that add strength and elasticity so it can withstand the daily stresses of styling.  TIP:  Give your mask time to work.  Once you apply, wrap hair in a saran wrap as the added heat will intensify the process.

For thick hair
Goldwell Ultra Rich Keratin Care Deep Smoothing Mask
6.4 oz. Reg. $42 - On Sale now $33.60
For thin/fine hair
ELC Dao of Hair RD-Plus
5.07 oz. $40

A fresh hair color for the New Year!

One of the most exciting and fun ways to give yourself a fresh lift in the new year is hair color. Bolds, brights, highlights and/or subtle, peek-a-boo pieces give us more than we need to choose from when shaking up a dull or dim base. For those of us who live for that next shade to keep things feeling fresh, these ideas are for you!

Go Back to Your Roots. If you’re like a lot of us, you don’t get your highlights touched up nearly as much as you wish you did. But if you’re a darker base, go ahead and give yourself a little more space to breathe.  Let your roots grow in an inch or two and schedule your next appointment even later than usual.
Blend Brown and Blonde. Try blurring the lines between blondes and brunettes. Try a hue that’s caramel or light brown with tints of gold.
Always Auburn. Shades of copper, rust and even hints of magenta are playful ways to shake up your tresses. Subtle signs or bright and bold, rocking auburn locks can be a fun change in your hair routine.
Go quietly crazy. Add a bold color to a section of your "underneath" hair.  Bright pink or a gorgeous deep blue on a section of hair that is only visible as your hair moves.
