Shimmer & Shine for the holidays!

You want a little extra oomph to your make-up for holiday parties.  Nothing shines the gold! The key is to add the touches in just the right places so your radiance is subtle, but stunning.

Adding gold dust on your cheekbones, temples and nose will provide a glowing complexion.  As a finishing touch, dust it lightly.  Jane Iredale's 24K Gold Dust Mini's (in gold or rose gold) are just perfect and it's real gold!

Baring your shoulder's or your décolleté?  Spritz on Brocato's Shimmer Gold Spray.  The gold flecks ad a sexy shimmer.  Best of all, this spray won't hurt clothes (you can actually spray it on them!).

Finish your lips with a touch of gloMinerals Rose Gold lip gloss.  Just a touch in the cupid's bow will provide your high-powered pouty lips with just the come hither festive look you want!

Finally your nails!  OPI's Rose Gold Nail Lacquer "Worth a Pretty Penne" looks festive, yet understated.

Reindeer Nails...add a little fun to your holiday style!

These may look very complicated, but they are really very easy to do.

- Start by painting your nails white and letting them dry.
- Next, paint the semi-circle round head of the reindeer. (If you have them, use your French nail guides.)
- Once the brown color is dry, use the tip of a brush to make the face features.  Round drops form the nose and eyes.  Small round black drops complete the eye.
- Finally, use a thin brush and deeper brown for the antlers.
- Finish with a clear top coat to seal.  Remember, these are fun...they don't al have to be perfect!

Winter...make some little changes to your beauty routine.

Winter can be a glorious, festive time of the year.  Snuggling on the couch in a cozy blanket with a warm cocoa or hot toddy and a great movie is just one of the wonderful perks of the cold season.  But, winter can bring challenges to your beauty care routine to keep your hair, skin and nails looking their best.  Take a few moments to read these tips...small changes that bring beautiful results.

Everyone's scalp dries out in the winter.  If you're finding flakes this time of the year, a weekly (or more often) dandruff shampoo should be your first change.  Be sure you get a quality shampoo that treats your hair kindly as it tackles the dry scalp.  Matrix Biolage ScalpSync is a great one.  If you like a sulfate-free shampoo, try Thermafuse Thermadan Sulfate-free Dandruff Relief.

Use a heavy-duty moisturizer from head-to-toe.  Apply it right after your shower or bath, while your skin is still damp to increase your moisture retention.  Even if your skin is normally fine, the dry, cold air of winter can have it feeling tight and itchy, so apply it every day.  Hempz Pure Hemp Ultra-hydrating Herbal Body Moisturizer or Cuccio Butter Blends (comes in 7 delightful scents).

Don't forget your lips.  The sensitive skin of your lip area needs extra protection at this time of year to avoid chapping and cracking.  If you already can feel it, it may be time for Qtica Intense Lip Repair Balm.  If you want prevention, then LaLicious' Lip Butter is perfect!

Fight the frizz and fly-away strands.  Keeping your hair soft and silky during this time of year can be a little challenging, so applying an anti-frizz lotion or spray to your hair is essential.    Redken Frizz Dismiss Lotion Spray or OSIS+ Tame Wild Smoothing Anti-Frizz cream are both great!

Take a little ME time!

If you're like me, holiday preparations can leave you feeling a little Grinch-y!  Between shopping, decorating, baking, kids out of school, the job and the extra social events, you have very little "me" time...and that's NOT good.  So...get out the fragrant bath salts and scrubs and a deliciously scented candle and fill the tub with steaming, soothing water.  Today, give yourself a treat!  You've earned it!  Don't tell yourself you don't have time.  Don't let anything interfere.  Set aside an hour tonight.  Then relax away the season's stress.  It's my plan for tonight and I promise you it will be worth it!

Parabens???

Beauty Care Choices has licensed cosmetologists as our customer service staff.  They get asked all types of questions each day, but one of the most common is, "What is Paraben?" or "Does it matter if it is paraben free?"

Paraben is the most commonly used preservative in the world of cosmetics and personal care products as well as in the food and drug categories.  Paraben is an inexpensive mix of acid and alcohol of p-hydroxybenzoic acid that effectively extends the shelf life of a product by preventing bacteria growth.  You can find them everywhere in your daily life; in soap, face and body moisturizers, deodorant, hair styling products, and even shaving cream.

While the FDA still approves the use of Paraben (with an advisory note to use as small a quantity as possible), it does not mean that you have to use it.  First, be sure to look at the ingredient list of any beauty or personal care products that you purchase.  Parabens are usually easy to spot as it includes “Paraben” at the end of the ingredient name.  Many beauty product companies are now using the extracts and oils of select plants and flowers known to have anti-bacterial properties.  The one caution...since these are organic products, be sure to check the expiration date.

Now you know!  If you ever have a question on a product we sell, how to use a product or ingredient, just call us.  (866) 409-7227.  Se habla espanol!

Fall /Winter hair care tips!

The winter months are approaching us and the days are much colder; it’s time to start thinking about ways to protect your hair from the damage that the winter elements and indoor heating can cause.

During the winter months, it’s a great idea to treat your hair once a week to a deep conditioning treatment. This will help to replenish the moisture, which tends to get depleted from things such as the dry heat in your home and the cold winter air.  You can find just what you need by clicking here!

If you can keep washing your hair to a minimum, say two to three times a week, this will prevent your hair from drying out too much. And always make sure you dry your hair before leaving the house.  The moisture in your hair combined with the cold air, will add further damage to your hair by making it more brittle and dry.

Fly-away hair is arguably the most annoying property of winter hair. It is caused by heated interior air and the contact of hair fibers with other fibers such as the fabric fibers of hats, headbands, and clothing. The movement of these fibers against hair produces static electricity, which makes hair stand on end. Use styling products that help to prevent fly-away hair. Among them are styling mousse, extra-gloss wax, and hair oil.

A final, very simple tip is to wear a hat when out as it keeps your hair covered from the wind, rain and snow. But as we all know, no woman wants the “dreaded hat hair.” A great way to avoid this is to wrap your hair in a silk scarf before putting on your cozy, wool beanie. This helps to protect your hair from damage caused by the hat rubbing against your hair and it also cuts down on the static.  You can also use a volumizing spray or salt spray before you blow-dry your hair while hanging your head upside down. Carry the spray with you to refresh your hairstyle after taking off your hat.

Time to amp up the Moisturizer!

As soon as the cold weather hits and the heat gets turned on, skin gets drier more quickly!  You may have a moisturizer that works well for spring and summer, but as the cold temperatures bring on the indoor heat (whether it's wood, oil or gas) the moisture content in the air drops.  During the winter use an oil-based (rather than water based) oil.  It will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion.  Choose your oils with care because not all oils are appropriate for the face.  Look for non-clogging oils like avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil or almond oil.  Find a moisturizer that contains a humectant (like glycerine, sorbitol and/or alpha-hydroxyl acids) because they attract moisture to your skin.  A couple of great ones - Hempz Hydrating Bath & Body Oil or The Oil by LaLicious.  You can see all of our great body moisturizers by clicking here.

Nine little secrets that make a difference!

Eye Cream Is Great For Cuticles
Instead of spending money on cuticle cream, you can use extra-moisturizing and hydrating eye cream to cure dry cuticles.

Nix Flaky Mascara
One of the main reasons mascara will flake onto your face after you apply it is because it's old. Opt for a new container and always remember to keep your mascara tube tightly sealed.

You Can Use Exfoliator Daily
Exfoliation is an important and easy way to buff away the dead skin cells that cover up your skin's natural glow. Use a light exfoliator, like the Daily Microfoliant from Dermalogica, to freshen your face daily.

Lock It In
When using cream-based beauty products -- like lipstick or foundation -- apply a dry face powder on top to seal in your look. This also works for blush (apply a cream blush to cheeks, then top with a dry blush).

Clarify Your Hair
In order to remove product build-up from locks, use a clarifying shampoo once a week. This will also help prevent dandruff and other annoying hair/scalp conditions.  No matter your favorite brand of shampoo, they will likely have a clarifying shampoo as well.

Replace Old Products Regularly
The effectiveness of products -- not to mention the amount of bacteria they breed -- wares after only a few months. Ditch old items and replace them with new ones.

Nix Post-Shaving Redness
Shave your face, legs or underarms in the shower after standing under warm water for a few minutes. This will help open up hair follicles and will soften hairs so they're less coarse to shave.

Clean Your Makeup Tools
Whether you use a razor, a Q-tip or a powder brush, make sure to clean your beauty tools. After even a couple uses, they become breeding grounds for bacteria, which can cause breakouts, eczema and many other skin conditions.  You can get a professional brush cleaner for less than $20.  These products, like TIGI's Pro Brush Cleaner, not only clean, but condition the brush.  Quality cosmetic brushes are a worthwhile investment and worth protecting.

Improve thinning hair and reverse hair loss!

New science and new innovations in hair re-growth, thinning hair and scalp care are constantly being introduced and Beauty Care Choices has the most current products available for improving hair growth, stimulating the scalp and hair follicles and giving you a better looking, healthier head of hair!  Need more information or help in deciding which products are right for you?  Our licensed cosmetologists are just a phone call away.  Let us help!

Understanding Hair Loss

The best way to think of the way hair grows is to picture a garden. How well it grows is completely a result of what is happening “underground.”   Like a garden, a normal hair cycle should lead to hair growth. Growth cycles are important because when they go awry, that is one of the reasons we have hair loss.  Things that interfere with the growth cycle -- like medication, illness, infection, or chemicals -- have the potential to stop hair from being formed properly.  Hair grows in three different cycles: anagen, catagen, and telogen. About 90% of the hair on the head is in the anagen, or growth phase, which lasts anywhere from two to eight years. The catagen, or transition phase, typically lasts 2-3 weeks, during which the hair follicle shrinks. During the telogen cycle, which lasts around two to four months, the hair rests.  An overwhelming majority of the time the hair is on the scalp, it is growing. Only about 10% of the strands are in transition or resting at any one time. Hair grows about 6 inches a year for most people.

Most people lose anywhere from 50 to 100 strands of hair each day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. On the days when hair is washed, people can lose up to 250 strands.  But don’t avoid washing in an attempt to keep the hair, as it will fall out eventually, anyway.  Typically, each time a normal hair follicle is shed, it is replaced by hair that is equal in size. But for men & women with male/female-pattern hair loss, the new hair is finer and thinner. The hair follicles are shrinking and eventually they quit growing altogether.

If your hair loss is sudden or extreme, a visit to your doctor should be your first step.  If you've addressed the medical concerns for hair loss, then there are products that can help you to re-grow hair or minimize the impact and look of thinning hair.

Check your hair loss facts!

Styling Products like hair spray and dye can make you lose your hair forever.

False:  If you overdo it with products or don't use them right, hair can get brittle. That could cause the shaft to break. But any hair loss should be temporary. Permanent loss comes when the root of your hair is hurt.

To keep your hair healthy, stagger appointments so you get a perm one time and color the next. See if you can go a little longer between touchups than your stylist recommends -- maybe 10 weeks instead of 8. Skip "long-lasting" sprays. While you're at it, let your hair air dry when you can to give it a break from harmful heat.

Brushing your hair 100 strokes a night helps it grow.

False:  It's OK to put down that hairbrush! Brushing that much can cause split ends and breakage. Also, use a wide-toothed comb. It keeps you from tugging at tangles and will do less damage.

Your best bet is to use conditioner first. Comb curly hair while it's damp and let straight hair dry a little first.

Stress can make your hair fall out.

True:  Dealing with drama takes energy away from hair growth and redirects it to more important body needs.

About 6 weeks to 3 months after stress starts, you may notice hair loss. It could take a while, but hair starts growing back once things are under control. If you know something hard is coming up, find ways now to ease your worries.

Your diet affects your hair.

True:  When you don't get enough iron or protein -- or you get too much vitamin A -- your hair can fall out. Get protein from meat, eggs, and beans. Get iron from fortified cereal, spinach, and clams. You can use supplements, but it's better to get your vitamin A from food so you don't overdo it.

Some people notice hair loss when they lose more than 15 pounds. The hair loss usually starts about 3 to 6 months later, but the hair will grow back on its own.

Waxing at Home made simple!

Waxing your legs for the first time?  Had a bad experience when you tried?  We have some fail-safe tips that will make your waxing experience easier and you will love the results.  Waxing keeps skin free from hair for much longer than shaving and doesn't leave you with stubble or razor burn.

There are many types of waxes you can use.   There is pot wax (Probably the most economical once you have the warmer) or easy to use roll-on wax kits, as well as waxes you heat in the microwave.  Pot wax Gigi 's Wax Warmer holds both 8 oz. and 14 oz. wax pots. You can also get hair removal strips that are pre-waxed.  Just peel and apply. They are great for lips and brows!  To see all waxing products, click here!

Before You Wax
  • Exfoliate with a sugar-based scrub. This prevents breakouts by removing dead skin around your hair follicles.
  • Clean the area with a cotton ball soaked in witch hazel or a pre-wax astringent. This will remove excess oil so wax sticks properly.
  • Before applying wax, pull skin taut. That makes it easier to remove the strip in one clean motion.
After You Wax
  • Remove leftover wax by dipping a cotton ball in baby oil and swiping it over the area. The oil lubricates your skin so residue will easily slip off.
  • If you've waxed your lip, don't use antiaging products for 24 hours. Freshly waxed skin is sensitive to the ingredients in these products.

Beauty Care Choices carries Gigi, Clean+Easy and Satin Smooth brand waxing products.

Solving the Dandruff Problem!

We always get asked about dandruff shampoos.  What are the top performers of professional salon shampoos?  Well a survey of over 200,000 Modern Salon Instagram followers gave us their top four and now we'll share them with you.

Redken Scalp Relief.  It is a 21 days treatment that gives great results.  Pyrithione zinc fights dandruff, glycerin hydrates the scalp and lavender extract soothes and clarifies.
Kenra Professional Dandruff Shampoo.  It has 1.9% zinc - most dandruff shampoos only have 1%.  Prescription is 2%.
Matrix Biolage ScalpSync Anti-dandruff Shampoo.  It's anti-bacterial, calming and weightless, plus it gives hair great body.
Tigi BedHead Reboot Shampoo.  It rebalances the pH of the scalp to help it retain moisture plus has bacteria fighting properties.

What if the problem is really, really persistent?  MEDIceuticals X-Folate - Persistent Dandruff/Psoriasis Treatment Shampoo is the one to try.  A recent customer review:
Psoriasis and Dandruff be gone! I had pretty bad psoriasis and dandruff. Flakes on my shirt, scalp was red and scabby. I used this product 2 or 3 times and my scalp cleared right up. It doesn't smell great, but it's kind of like gasoline: you learn to secretly like the scent. I just follow up with a scented conditioner and I don't have any problems with my scalp. Would Recommend!

The Best Hairspray Tips

Most people have hair spray in their bathroom cabinet. Should you just spray it on top of your hair to give it the desired hold or can you also apply it close to the hair roots? Which of the many hair sprays should you use for different purposes?

There is a broad spectrum of hair nurturing sprays for certain hair structures (e. g. curly or color-treated and therefore dry hair); there are also hair sprays, which protect against the effects of intense sun exposure. Perfume-free hair sprays are available for people who are sensitive to fragrances.

You should select hair spray according to its purpose. Use hair spray for light hold if you like your hair to still move naturally. Hair spray for strong hold keeps your hair in place in storm and most weather. You may have spent much effort on an elaborate hair style and would like to keep it intact for a while. In such a case, hair spray with ultra-strong hold serves your purpose.  Some hair varnishes are suitable for styling individual strands of your hair or very short hair styles.

Tip 1:
Innovative hair sprays prevent hair strands from sticking together. To take advantage of these formulations you must however hold the spray nozzle at least 30 centimetres (almost 12") away from your hair and keep the spray can in constant motion
Tip 2:
Before using the hair spray, make sure that the spray nozzle is not gummed up. Otherwise, the hair spray will not leave the can as a fine mist but rather in sticky spurts.
Tip 3:
Apply hair spray as follows if you want to give your hair more volume: Shake your hair while holding your head upside down. Then throw your hair back again without too much force. Lift individual strands of hair, and from a shorter distance apply a little hair spray underneath the strands. Allow the hair spray to dry before moving to the next strand.
Tip 4:
Tip for women with bob haircuts: Slightly lift the covering hair and apply the hair spray at an angle from below toward the hair ends. This provides marvellous hold to bevelled side hair.
Tip 5:
You can give hair a lot of hold and bounce by spraying it liberally over your hair and then either put heated rollers into your hair, use a curling iron or pull the hair ends through a flat iron. Then apply some more hair spray to give your hairdo hold. This is how it is done backstage for the big fashion events.

Right now you can save up to 50% on all hairsprays...click here to see the savings on your favorite brand.

Make-up Tips for every age!

Your 20s and 30s are the decades to let your natural beauty shine! The biggest mistake women in this age group make: trying too many trends at once.  These are still the years when women want to look trendy and modern, but too often they try too many trends all at the same time.
To stay on-trend but not overdone, pick one item from a particular trend -- say, metallic eye shadow or glitzy lips -- and
never wear more than one trend on your face at a time.

In your 40's, toss away your cakey face powder. This is the decade when skin is really dry and most powders will dry it further and accentuate fine lines and wrinkles.  If you must use powder to tame oily areas, choose one that is finely milled and apply it sparingly, using a brush instead of a puff.

For women in their 50s, less is definitely more. You want to minimize the amount of product you put on your face.  Foundations should be lighter and applied only where you need it; avoid powders; and don't overdo it on the eye makeup.  Bypass heavy eye shadow altogether. Instead, smudge a soft pencil liner in charcoal gray or soft brown close to the edge of your upper lid. Then use mascara only on the upper lashes. For the biggest boost, use an eyelash curler. It's like giving yourself a temporary eye lift. If you haven't used one since your 20s or 30s, now is time to use it again.

Makeup tips for the 60 + : If you're not ready to go under the knife, or simply want to accept the aging process with grace, makeup can help. The key is to keep your look simple. The biggest makeup mistake older women make is wearing too much eye make-up -- and still trying to find and darken the crease in the eye socket. By the time you reach 60, the only way you're going to find that crease is with the help of a good surgeon. So instead, just use a soft pencil to smudge some color near the lid and leave the crease alone.  Go easy on foundation and wear a pink-toned blush and moisturizing lipstick. If you want to color your hair, go lighter, not darker. And never darken your brows.
Going darker with hair or brow color is a big mistake. It creates a harsh look that emphasizes lines and wrinkles.

The best advice for all women is to let your natural beauty shine and "be strong and be confident!"

Achieving the "Wet-Look" Hair!

You see top models and celebs with these fabulous slicked-back wet-look styles.  So you think, I love that look and I'm going to try it.  Yet, you end up with a yucky, sticky mess!  You've tried your gel and hairspray and even a little hair oil, but can never quite pull it together.  Well, we're going to tell you how...a nd it is so simple.  Reach to the other side of the hair product aisle, to the traditionally men's grooming and grab the pomade.  Yup...that's it!

"Layrite is seriously phenomenal. It’s this old-school men’s pomade that slicks hair down beautifully without any flakes or crunch, and it washes out really easily,” says Kristin Ess, celebrity stylist.  The styling tip: dip a tint brush into the pomade and, section by section, painted it over the hair, making sure each strand of hair is totally saturated, so it will lay flat. That's it, nothing more. The pomade keeps everything in place until you wash it out; it’s amazing.

Have curly hair and want the look.  No problem, the coolest thing about pomade is it straightens your curls as you comb through it.

Be as great as DaVinci when you contour!

Chiaroscuro is an Italian word used to describe the use of light and dark in a way that creates a three-dimensional effect.  DaVinci's Mona Lisa uses this technique to bring her face to life.  He also used a technique called sfumato which means blurring of lines - a softening with no sharp edges and a complete inability to tell where colors begin and end.  When you follow the techniques of DaVinci, your face will always be ready for a "selfie" or the flash from some else's camera.

Slapping on a little bronzer in the wrong color can make you look clownish.  So what are the right colors?  Choose a color that's a couple of shades darker than you skin tone for contour.  Shimmery pearls in gold, pink, beige or peach work best for highlighting.

You are working to achieve facial definition by following the premise that dark colors recede and light colors stand out.

First apply your foundation, tinted moisturizer or BB cream, but not your concealer.  (You may not need much if you are contouring correctly.)

Now, depending on your face shape, brush your bronzer onto the areas like under the cheekbones, chin and jaw line, down the sides of your nose if you want a narrowing effect, temples and where the brow bone meets the hair line.

Next use your highlighter from the last third of the brow bone to the top of the cheek bone.  Apply it on the bridge of the nose, but not quite to the tip.  You can also apply it in the corners of the mouth to achieve lift and on the bow of the lips to achieve a pout.  Put it in the corner of each eye to brighten and widen eyes.

Finally, and this is the most important...the true artistic touch...Blend, Blend, Blend.  Think you've blended enough...blend some more!  Sfumato (blur)  those lines!

Every girl wants to be a princess at least once!

Beauty Care Choices is not just an online retailer.  We are also a salon in Redding, California.  We love being involved in community events such as Think Pink (which started in Redding by the way), Locks of Love and our local Women's Health programs.  This, however, is one of our favorite events!  It's a little girls' Princess Tea!  This annual event raises funds for the Youth Caring for Youth charity.  Our "real" princesses and princes are all local volunteer teens.  Beauty Care Choices salon staff do their hair and make-up and then spend the rest of the day with the young attendees in the "Bibbity Bobbity" salon.

Your little lady will meet some of her favorite Storybook Princess Characters as she walks down an enchanted pathway into the Grand Ballroom. It’s a Fairy Tale come true as your little princess feasts on the “Happily Ever After” Dessert Tower. She will get the "royal" treatment as she receives a light dusting of makeup in the “Bibbity Bobbity” Salon. There will be a “Wonderland Craft” area and afterwards, she is invited to glide in the Princess Parade to kick off the start of the ball. Also, she will have an opportunity to sing along with the princesses and have her picture taken with her favorite princess.

Beauty products for ageless beauty!

Achieving timeless beauty takes a little time and effort and quality products that protect. Don't wait for the first wrinkle to appear before your start. Don't wait for hair to appear thin, lifeless and dull. If its already happened, then you need products that help to reduce or minimize the damage and to protect going forward. It is never too late. Today's anti-aging technologies and recent skincare and hair care breakthroughs means you have some powerful weapons for timeless beauty defense.

What should you look for in an anti-aging skin and hair care products? Surprisingly, some of the same ingredients used in skin care anti-aging products are also the essential anti-aging hair care ingredients. Beauty Care Choices makes it easy to know before you buy...product ingredients are listed right on the product web page.

Alterna's Caviar products are anti-aging hair care at its best. The Caviar CC Cream 10-in-1 Complete Correction is a miracle for repairing damage and adding smoothness and moisture to hair. To keep hair supercharged daily you can't beat Caviar Anti-aging Rapid Repair Spray. Get gloriously gorgeous shine and moisture easily. TIP: blow-dry hair...when hair is nearly dry, spritz a little and brush as you finish drying or styling. You won't see flyaways or frizz, just beautiful hair.
Take care of your face during the day using Robanda Anti-Aging Moisturizer with SPF 30 (the level of protection recommended by dermatologists). The luxuriously lightweight creme replenishes moisture and enhances cell renewal as it protects. At night, cleanse face thoroghly and apply the Intensive Night Cream. It beautifully moisturizes and provides powerful anti-aging benefits. Robanda is all about anti-aging skin care prevention and repair.   Need immediate repair?  Instantly Ageless is a facelift in a bottle.  It works to instantly reverse signs of aging and lasts up to 8 hours.

Bad night's sleep? Feeling droopy and your face shows it? Extreme Lift Face by Kinerase is your anti-aging and repair best friend. It immediately reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. After cleansing skin, smooth it on (a little goes a long way) and wait 5 minutes before applying moisturizers and make-up. You will see and love the results.

Key Anti-aging Ingredients:
  • Retinol - a derivative of vitamin A, making it a milder version of retinoids (a prescription-only wrinkle fighter). While it takes several weeks to see results, retinol is the most effective over-the-counter anti-aging ingredient. Apply retinol-based products at night on dry skin to avoid sensitivity and be sure to apply a moisturizer with SPF every morning.
  • Ceramides (Skin and Hair) - the "glue" that holds out skin together and will help to mend broken hair fibers and reinforce the hair's structure. Niacinamide - lightens dark spots caused from acne scars, sun damage or old age with a vitamin B3 derivative that prevents pigmentation from rushing to the surface.
  • Hyaluronic Acid (Skin and Hair)- a humectant, meaning that it draws out water from the air and dermis (the skin that lies below the surface). It even spurs new collagen production.
  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids - exfoliators that gently dissolve the "glue" that holds surface skin cells together, letting the dead ones slough away to reveal youthful looking skin. This process encourages cell turnover, which typically slows with age. Getting rid of dead skin also lets moisturizers, serums, and skin treatments penetrate the skin and work more effectively.
  • L-ascorbic acid - is stable Vitamin C, an important antioxidant that helps build collagen, reduce inflammation, and promote elasticity to plump up skin.
  • Avobenzone - protection against UVA rays paired with benzophenone-3 or oxybenzone to shield against UVB rays. For maximum protection, apply a chemical sunscreen directly on skin before serum, lotion, or makeup.
  • Antioxidants (Skin and Hair) - slow down the clock and help prevent and repair damage to your body tissue by encouraging cell growth, neutralize free radicals (unstable, damaging molecules in your body caused by elements such as sunlight, smoke, and pollution). The most popular antioxidants include vitamins C and E, pomegranate, green tea, and coffeeberry extracts.

The best hair brush bristle type for your hair.

Investing in a good brush or two can be worth the money, especially if you like to change up your style often.  We've discussed before the types of brushes (round barrel, paddle, teasing, etc.) and the shape of the brush(es) you need depends on your style.  The bristles on the brush are just as important.

Bristle type: Boar
True boar bristle brushes are made from 100% natural (humanely cultivated) wild boar hair. They should be tightly packed together and feel stiff, but with some flexibility. These bristles distribute oils evenly throughout strands and are great for achieving a smooth, shiny blowout. If you have thick course hair that requires tug to achieve fullness, boar bristle brushes are worth the investment. They make styling easier and promote shine and smoothness—benefits almost everyone wants. If you have fine hair and own one of these brushes, your investment isn’t lost; boar bristles can add volume to fine and normal hair types—as long as your brush has a nice natural give.

Bristle type: Nylon
Nylon bristles are less expensive than boar brushes, but still effective. The bristles are usually spaced farther apart than boar and achieve a medium to strong grip on all hair types, especially those with medium density or finer strands. The better the grip, the smoother and straighter your style will be.  If brushes tend to get stuck in your hair mid-twirl or you suffer from serious static issues try a brush that combines nylon and boar bristles.

Bristle type: Plastic
Plastic and synthetic bristles are your general, all-purpose brushes. The bristles are incredibly strong, made for working through larger areas of medium to thick hair.  These are a “first step” kind of brush, best for detangling and preliminary blow-drying. When you’ve removed most of the excess water, switch to a round boar or nylon brush for styling, smoothing, and adding shine.

This week all Olivia Garden Brushes are on sale - 20% off!  It's a great time to upgrade your brush!

Hair loss and coloring your hair

Ready to hit the bottle? With a few precautions, coloring thinning hair can be safe -- and may even protect the hair shaft from breaking.  There's a myth that permanent hair-color is damaging, but that's only true if you bleach your hair or if you use the color incorrectly.   Meanwhile, semi-permanent colors that are acid-based may protect around the hair cuticle, and acid-based colors may coat -- and protect -- the hair. Follow these tips to give thinning locks a healthy new hue.

Skip the Bleach.  You're most likely to damage your hair if you make a drastic color change requiring bleach, such as going from jet black to blonde. If it's properly applied, regular hair color shouldn't be a problem.

Check the Contrast.  Choose a hue that's close to the color of your scalp. It will draw less attention to thin tresses. There’s less contrast between skin and hair tones to draw the eye. Also, as you ages, having lighter hair around your face makes you look younger and softens your features.

Consider Salon Color.  Professionals will have more access to a variety of options and higher-end coloring agents. Your stylist’s experience with color is important, too.  Ask about vegetable-based dyes, cellophanes, and hennas, all of which are gentle options for thinning hair. Also, ask your stylist about products that are ammonia- and peroxide-free. And avoid bleach.

Rules for Do-It-Yourselfers
  • Check the label: Choose brands with less than 20% peroxide, and don't bleach thinning hair.
  • Think temporary: Use semi-permanent color, if you can. If it doesn’t cover your stubborn greys, apply permanent color at the roots and semi-permanent on the rest.

True or False...Facts about hair loss.

Our new giveaway is from Bosley Professional.  Bosley is an expert in hair restoration, but they also make great products for those with thinning and thin hair that help keep your hair and scalp healthy and styling products that give your hair extra care while adding volume.  If you have thinning hair, test yourself below...true or false...thinning hair facts.
