Marbled Nail effects made easy.

You are not going to believe how easy this is!

1.  Using a Q-tip, apply a thin layer of Vaseline on skin around nail.  This is not essential, but it does make it easier to clear away unwanted polish.

2.  Fill a small cup with cold water.  Add a few drops of each color polish you want in your marbling.  The polish will float on top, creating swirls.

3.  Dip each finger and make sure the polish sticks to your nail. Let dry, then clean edges.  Finish with clear top coat.

Six tips for healthy hair!

Beautiful hair does not come naturally.  Unless you're seven or amazingly lucky, hair needs care and attention.  Fortunately, most of the best ways for keeping hair looking youthful and healthy cost you nothing.

Avoid heat tools whenever you can.  If your style allows, shampoo hair at night and let it dry naturally.  If you need heat to style, be sure to use a heat protector.  Remember, heat always leaves a little damage behind.

Trim you hair regularly.  Ends of hair get dry and brittle over time.  Trimming just 1/4 inch each month will reduce the chances of split ends.

Moisturize...and use a deep conditioner once every week.  Oils are also essential for a healthy hair and scalp.

Eat right!  Limp and weak hair is a sign of a poor diet.  Fish (especially salmon), avocados, nuts and leafy dark greens are essential for healthy hair.

Treat wet hair as gently as possible. Use a wide-tooth comb when your hair is wet.  Wood combs are best.  Wet hair is more prone to breakage.  When shampooing, don't rub the roots of your will weaken the hair.  Instead, gently massage your scalp to promote good circulation.  When toweling wet hair, gently squeeze, never rub.  If you don't have a good wide-tooth wood comb, BCC has the Olivia Garden Eco-Friendly Bamboo Comb collection...only $7.50 each.

Use "hair-safe" accessories.  Avoid sharp pins or ties with metal connectors.  They tend to get tangled in the hair and cause more breakage.

I feel great!  I may look a little haggard, my house may be in chaos, the tree is definitely drooping, but I still feel great!  In fact, my heart is full.  Family, friends and the already cherished memories of the past few days have made this a wonderful end to 2015.  I hope you are blessed with the same feelings.

This week our Box of Beauty giveaway started today and will run through January 3.  Two of my favorite products are included in this box...Pravana Nevo Intense Leave-In Therapy and Thermafuse f450 One Pass (both full size by the way!).  The Pravana is 100% Vegan and 100% Gluten Free.  This is my go-to product during the holiday season when my hair is tortured into submission for various styles and sprayed into submission so the style holds longer than its usual half hour!  I spray it on after every shampoo. (be sure to shake it first to mix the 2 phases.)   It detangles, moisturizes, protects from the heat and leaves my hair shining!  The other favorite, f450 from Thermafuse is vital year round!  This Hot Iron Activated Smoothing Crème keeps the frizz away, smells great and makes using a flat iron much easier.  Plus, the straightening with last for 2 days!

Caring for a child's hair - Simple Do's and Don'ts

Ever wondered what the difference is between regular and baby shampoo.  Adult shampoos contain chemicals called anionics (like ammonium laurel sulfate) that create the lather most people want when they shampoo.  This can be very drying, but since most adults use conditioner and other styling products and have oilier skin than kids, it's not an issue.

Be shampoo savvy when it comes to caring for infant and toddlers hair washing.
Babies only need to have hair washed once or twice a week.   If your baby has cradle cap, which (despite the flakes) is an oily-skin condition, wash with a dandruff shampoo two or three times a week after massaging a little olive or baby oil onto his scalp to loosen the flakes.
Toddlers: Three times a week is fine (more often if he's got a penchant for mashing bananas on his head).
Preschoolers and up: As your child's hair gets longer, wash it every other day (less often for very curly, dry, or African-American hair; in these cases, you can use conditioner once a week, too).
At any age: Always shampoo at the end of the bath so your child's not sitting in the sudsy water, which could irritate sensitive skin.

The best way to comb painlessly after shampooing:

  • DO use a wide-tooth comb, or a boar-bristle or paddle brush, on dry hair. Avoid using your vent brush, which has tiny teeth that can snag.
  • DON'T start at the top; you'll just make tangles worse. Instead, begin at the ends and slowly work your way up the hair shaft, gently pulling apart knots with your fingers.
  • DO the hair at the nape of the neck first, which tends to get most tangled.
  • DON'T wet bad snarls. They'll only get more matted. Work in some regular hair conditioner or spray detangler, and hold the hair at the scalp while you gently comb out.

It's time for a Bath!

If you're like me, holiday preparations can leave you feeling a little Grinch-y!  Between shopping, decorating, baking, kids out of school, the job and the extra social events, you have very little "me" time...and that's NOT good.  So...get out the fragrant bath salts and scrubs and a deliciously scented candle and fill the tub with steaming, soothing water.  Today, give yourself a treat!  You've earned it!  Don't tell yourself you don't have time.  Don't let anything interfere.  Set aside an hour tonight.  Then relax away the season's stress.  It's my plan for tonight and I promise you it will be worth it!

Ultra Smooth, Shiny Hair

Love the look of sleek, shiny hair.  Follow the expert tips below for achieving ultra-smooth tresses.

PREP: The sleek look begins with your preparation.  Brush your dry hair before you shower, from the ends up.  Wet hair breaks more easily, leading to broken strands and flyaways in the shower.  Then shampoo only from the scalp to the mid-length of the hair to prevent over drying the ends.  Apply a smoothing conditioner (CHI Enviro Smoothing Conditioner is a great one) and use a wide-tooth comb to distribute it evenly through the hair.  Towel dry your hair by squeezing out the water...don't rub hair with a towel as it creates frizz.

Apply a golf ball size heat-protecting mousse and layer in a shine oil.  If you don't have one, try Alfaparf's Semi di Lino Eco-Mousse.

BLOW DRY.  Using a nylon-bristle brush, wrap your hair flat to your head, going right to left and drag the bristles for tension as you dry.  Then go from left to right.  Once roots to mid-length are dry, pull the ends straight down with the brush and dry with a blast of cold for added shine.

Fun Reindeer Nails!

These may look very complicated, but they are really very easy to do.

- Start by painting your nails white and letting them dry.
- Next, paint the semi-circle round head of the reindeer. (If you have them, use your French nail guides.)
- Once the brown color is dry, use the tip of a brush to make the face features.  Round drops form the nose and eyes.  Small round black drops complete the eye.
- Finally, use a thin brush and deeper brown for the antlers.
- Finish with a clear top coat to seal.  Remember, these are fun...they don't al have to be perfect!

Fade away those dark spots!

Looking to fade dark spots, zap sun damage and even out the color of your skin overall?  Skin lightening creams do help.  Most products work in the same manner. They stop the enzyme that makes the cells that generate the color in your skin -- otherwise known as melanin. A few key ingredients can accomplish this: hydroquinone, arbutin, and kojic acid. Both DermaE Skin Lighten and Clinical Care (Skin)Solutions Go Spot Go work well.

Patience is key if you decide to try one of these products. Because of the life cycle of skin cells and the color-making process, you'll wait about 8 to 12 weeks before you begin to see a real difference.   Some doctors suggest using a retinoid product (such as Retin-A) along with the lightener to help speed things up.

The dark side, so to speak, to slathering on these creams -- particularly the strongest ones -- can be skin irritation and a greater risk of sunburn. So
use sunscreen (SPF 30) every day, even when it rains. Steroid creams such as hydrocortisone reduce inflammation and creams rich in antioxidants can help with irritation and protect your skin from further damage.

Secret changes to your Make-up Routine to make you look younger!

Make-up was easy in our teens and 20's, but as laugh lines start to appear, using the same make-up routine may make you look older.  Just as your skin care routine must change as you age, so should your make-up.  Time dries and thins our facial skin, so the products you used five years ago could look matronly now.

Start your new make-up routine with a high-quality skin primer.  It fills in small wrinkles, making them less visible.  If you haven't ever used one, you will notice the difference right away.  Try Veil Foundation Primer by Bodyography

Change your foundation.  Instead of the thick foundation slathered on the skin - which tends to break into deep cracks - apply moisturizer, primer, then a light liquid foundation.  Tap it on with a sponge rather than rubbing it in.  Jane Iredale's Glow time BB Cream is perfect!

Apply make-up using a good magnifying mirror.  Our eyesight tends to decline as we age and applying flattering make-up takes precision.  Just because you can't see the wiggly eye liner doesn't mean everyone else can't.

As we age, the eyelids tend to droop, so the goal is to draw attention away from the lid and toward the actual eye. Eyeliner is the key. Apply it in a thin streak along the line where the lashes begin, top and bottom. This will enhance the shape of your eye and create the illusion of thicker lashes. Use soft shades and a light touch when applying eye shadow.

Put back your eyebrows. Eyebrows are extremely important because they frame the face.  Brows tend to grow thinner and grayer with age. Use an eyebrow pencil that complements your hair color. Placing powder over the pencil will help it stay put.

Keep lips plump and moisturized. Few things draw attention to wrinkles like bleeding lip color. This happens because lipstick is a cream and it tends to slip into any low spaces -- including the lines around your lips. To keep color from traveling, use moisturizer, then coat the lips with foundation before applying lipstick.  HINT: keep lips supple with LaLicious Lip Butter - apply at night and in the morning.  It's a little jar, but a lasts a long time!

Skin care ingredients and what they do!

Choosing a skin care product that will accomplish what you want it to can be a little overwhelming...especially when you look at the ingredients list.  Below is a list of the most common ingredient

Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

Alpha-hydroxy acids include glycolic, lactic, tartaric, malic, and citric acids. They have become increasingly popular over the last 20 years. In the U.S. alone, there are over 200 makers of skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids.  Creams and lotions with alpha-hydroxy acids may help with fine lines, irregular pigmentation, and age spots. Side effects of alpha-hydroxy acids include mild irritation and sun sensitivity.

Beta-Hydroxy Acid (Salicylic Acid)

Salicylic acid exfoliates skin and can improve its texture and color. It also helps with acne.
Many skin care products contain salicylic acid. Some are available over-the-counter and others require a doctor's prescription. Studies have shown that salicylic acid is less irritating than skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids but has similar results in improving skin texture and color.
Warning: People who are allergic to salycylates (found in aspirin) should not use products containing salicylic acid. Salicylic acid can be absorbed into the bloodstream and may cause an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis. Pregnant or nursing women should not use products containing salicylic acid.

Skin care products containing hydroquinone are often called bleaching creams or lightening agents. These skin care products are used to lighten hyperpigmentation, such as age spots and dark spots related to pregnancy or hormone therapy (also called melasma).  Some over-the-counter skin care products contain hydroquinone. Your doctor can also prescribe a product with a higher concentration of hydroquinone if your skin doesn't respond to over-the-counter treatments. If you are allergic to hydroquinones, you can use products containing kojic acid instead. Pregnant women cannot use hydroquinone.

Kojic Acid

Kojic acid is a more recent remedy for treating pigment problems and age spots. First developed in 1989, kojic acid has a similar effect as hydroquinone. Kojic acid is made from a fungus, and studies have shown that it is effective at lightening skin.

Retinol is made from vitamin A, and it's in many non-prescription skin care products. Retinol's stronger counterpart is tretinoin, which is the active ingredient in Retin-A and Renova, available by prescription only.  If your skin is too sensitive to use Retin-A, retinol is an alternative, although the effects are less impressive. Retinol may improve mottled pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, skin texture, and skin tone and color.

You may also hear about retinyl palmitate. This is in the same family as retinol, but if the skin care product you choose contains retinyl palmitate, you will need to use more of this product than one that contains retinol to get the same effect. Pregnant women or nursing mothers cannot use retinol.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps to minimize fine lines, scars, and wrinkles. It's the only antioxidant that is proven to boost production of collagen, which is a key part of skin's structure.  Be choosy when selecting a vitamin C product. Vitamin C in its most commonly found forms is highly unstable when exposed to oxygen, making it useless. Choose one in a tube or a pump. Also, many topical vitamin C preparations do not penetrate the skin enough to make a difference.

Hyaluronic Acid

Skin care products containing hyaluronic acid are often used with vitamin C products to assist in effective penetration.  Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally (and quite abundantly) in people and animals and is found in young skin, other tissues, and joint fluid.  Hyaluronic acid is part of the body's connective tissues, and is known to cushion and lubricate. Aging destroys hyaluronic acid. Diet and smoking can also affect your body's level of hyaluronic acid over time.  Skin care products with hyaluronic acid are most frequently used to treat wrinkled skin although they don't replace anything the body has naturally lost. These are very effective moisturizers.

Copper Peptide

Studies have shown that copper peptide promotes the production of collagen and elastin in your skin. It also acts as an antioxidant and promotes production of glycosaminoglycans (such as hyaluronic acid).  Studies have also shown that copper-dependent enzymes help firm, smooth, and soften the skin quicker than most other anti-aging skin care products. In addition, copper peptides have been shown to remove damaged collagen and elastin from the skin and scar tissue.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-lipoic acid diminishes fine lines, gives skin a healthy glow, and boosts levels of other antioxidants, such as vitamin C.   Alpha-lipoic acid can enter all parts of a skin cell. Due to this quality, it is believed that alpha-lipoic acid can provide more protection than other antioxidants against so-called free radicals that can damage skin.

DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol)

The brain makes DMAE. DMAE in skin care products shows minimal effects at best when applied on skin for the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.
