Total Results So Long Damage also absorbed the Total Results Heat Resist line by adding the new Iron Tamer. So Long Damage covers the bright red section of the new Total Results rainbow.

Choosing Eye Shadow: Powder or Liquid

Have you ever envied someone whose eye shadow looks gorgeous and perfectly blended with clear colors.  Then, when you try to copy it you end up with a smudgy mess.  Well we have some tips for you that might just make your shadow the envy of others.

A good powder eye shadow is heavily pigmented. The color reveals itself with the first stroke and will not fade. As a rule, matte eye shadow has a more sheer texture, while shimmer (in the form of mica particles) gives eye shadow a rich texture that intensifies its color.

For easy application, and to increase staying powder, prime your eyelids with foundation or some eye cream followed by powder. Apply thin layers of eye shadow with a dry sponge applicator, and then blend with a brush.  This way you avoid eye shadow falling off the brush onto your face and spoiling your facial makeup. You also keep your brushes clear of color and ready for blending.
Use a rounded applicator to apply your base color, and a pointed applicator for contouring shades. For blending you will need:
  • a thick springy flat brush for applying highlighter and for precise blending.
  • a soft rounded brush for erasing demarcation lines by removing excess makeup.
Choose your brushes according to the size of your eyelids; the larger the area you have to work on, the bigger your brushes will need to be.

Liquid or creamy eye shadow should have a lightweight texture that is easy to apply and blend. It must dry quickly to avoid it gathering in the creases. Waterproof liquid eye shadow has the best staying power. Fluid texture is best for single color application. Because this type of eye shadow blends so well, don’t use it for more than two colors, as three shades will create a greyish mess on your eyelids. It may also occur if you use fluid creamy eye shadow together with creamy eyeliner, or an eye pencil that is too soft.  Apply creamy eye shadow with your fingertip. Blend it with a sponge applicator, or with a small synthetic brush.

Improve & fix flaws with eye shadow

To make small eyes look bigger, don’t outline the contour of your eye with a dark color. Apply shimmery base eye shadow on the entire mobile lid. Highlight with a light iridescent shade under the eyebrow and in the inside corner and contour of the eye to define its outer corner. Instead of dark eye shadow along the lashes, use eyeliner along and beyond the upper lash line to elongate your eyes. Use eyeliner on the lower lid for a festive look.
For protruding eyes, matte eye shadow is preferable to iridescent as a base and contouring color. In the crease, blend contouring color halfway down to the lashes, visibly shrinking the size of the mobile lid. Curling your lashes may be the best remedy to reduce bulginess.
Mature eyes look best with a light base eye shadow all over the eyelid, and a soft highlighter under the eyebrow. Lift your eyes by applying color strictly above your upper eyelid, keeping the sides and lower lid free of base eye shadow. Use brown or grey mascara instead of black.
For Asian eyes, don’t attempt to draw a line above your natural crease with a dark color. Instead, try to create the illusion of eyelids by applying bright shimmery eye shadow on and above the crease. It should occupy about one third of the space between your lashes and your eyebrows. Be aware that this technique works well only if your eyelids aren’t saggy.
Large wide-set eyes look beautiful as they are; smaller ones need some work. Draw your shading line in the crease, close to the inner corner, but don’t deliberately try to make your eyes appear closer by applying dark eye shadow near your nose. Apply eye shadow within the border defined by the eye shape, and don’t whiten your inner corners.

Finding the Right Foundation for Your Skin Type

Finding the right foundation for your skin and the look you want is worth the time and effort.  Take this short quiz then look to see which foundation formula is right for you.

How would you describe your skin?
  • A. Oily/combination
  • B. Dry
  • C. Normal
  • D. Sensitive

What's your biggest foundation gripe?
  • A. It disappears by noon.
  • B. It looks flaky and dull.
  • C. It feels heavy.
  • D. It irritates my skin.

What are you trying to hide?
  • A. Large pores and/or acne
  • B. Fine lines and/or brown spots
  • C. Nothing; I just want to blend minor imperfections.
  • D. Redness

The look you crave is:
  • A. matte
  • B. dewy
  • C. natural
  • D. even
Mostly A's/Zap oil - When a foundation that contains oil comes into contact with oily skin, things get slick, causing your makeup to break down and slide off. Choose an oil-free liquid with lightweight silicone, which helps pigments adhere but won't clog pores.  Try Tigi Whipped Foundation; GloProfessional Liquid Matte Finish or Satin Finish or Youngblood Radiance Crème Powder.

Mostly B's/Go creamy - Boost hydration with a rich anti-aging formula that contains moisturizing ingredients, like glycerin.  A BB cream is also a good choice: It packs emollients, anti-agers, antioxidants, and sunscreen in one tube. Try Jane Iredale Glow Time BB Cream; DermaE's BB Cream Multi-Functional Beauty Balm or Dermablend Cover Cream.

Mostly C's/Lighten up - Lucky you! You're blessed with low-maintenance skin and can wear any foundation. For a believable finish, go for sheer liquids with light-reflecting particles or opt for a tinted moisturizer that has just enough pigment to even out your skin without being noticeable.  Try Mirabella Skin Tint Cream; Dermalogica Sheer Tint, Jane Iredale Dream Tint or Bodyography Tinted Moisturizer Flawless Finish.

Mostly D's/Correct and cover -  If you're the sensitive type, mineral makeup is for you. Most contain skin soothers, such as zinc, and are free of potential irritants, like fragrance and preservatives. Highly pigmented mineral formulas cover broken capillaries, redness, and discoloration. If you find loose powder too messy, look for a pressed version. Try GloProfessional GloMineral Loose Base Powder Foundation; Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Natural Loose Mineral Foundation or Pressed Based Powder Foundation or Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Pressed Mineral Foundation.

Yeah for DeAnna!

Congratulation to DeAnna K, Toledo, OH for winning the "Nails & More" Box of Beauty.  We hope you enjoy it all!

Using Concealers

As we start our final week of our August repair series (having covered hair, skin & nails) it's time now for cosmetics!  Having a flawless complexion is fantastic, but if you are like most of us, you need a little help to achieve that flawless look.  That's where your best friend becomes your concealer!  So let's start with a few tips on how to best apply and use concealers.

Know what issues different colors of concealer fix.   Peach shades cancel out blue circles or bruising, green hide red blemishes, and yellow-toned concealers correct almost all uneven skin tones.  GloMinerals has a Corrective Camouflage Kit that contains all four colors so you are always prepared! (Only $19.00)

If you use foundation, apply it first, and then apply your concealer.  If you apply your foundation first, you'll find that you don't need to use as much concealer. If you apply concealer first, however, you'll remove most of it while applying your foundation.

The most flattering way to apply concealer is to draw a triangle with the base under your eye and the point toward your cheek.  This shape not only conceals dark circles, but it also instantly creates the illusion that your face is lifted. Think of it as holding a flashlight against your cheek, shining the light right underneath your eye, and drawing the focus upward.

To prevent your eye shadow from falling off your lid and settling in the creases, prime your eyelids first with a dab of concealer.   If you can't justify spending extra on eye shadow primer, a dab of concealer works just as well.

When concealing a pimple, first use a green concealer, then cover the area with a concealer that matches your skin tone perfectly.  Cancel out a pimple's redness by applying green concealer with a clean brush to only the pimple (not the skin around it) to avoid spreading the bacteria. Then, use a cotton swab to dab on a high-coverage liquid concealer that matches your skin tone to camouflage the pimple. Blend it into the surrounding skin and finish with setting powder.

Dab an orange- or peach-colored concealer over dark under-eye circles with your ring finger. Your ring finger, which is your weakest, will apply just the right amount of pressure to blend in the concealer without pulling at your delicate eye skin, and the orange or peach tones will cancel out the blue shadows that your under-eye circles give off. Top the orange or peach formula with a cover-up that matches your skin.

Ask Ally - Discolored Nails & the Zoya Naked Manicure

My nails are terribly discolored, but I work in a job where polish is a waste of time and effort (it is chipped within an hour).  Can you help!  Gina M, Orlando FL

Ally:  I'm so glad you asked as I have just found this wonderful product - Zoya's Naked Manicure.  My Grandma is a gardener and her hands are always handling dirt (and other items I shudder to imagine) so her nails were often chipped, cracked and discolored.  I found the perfect solution and she loves it!   Zoya Naked Manicure was the Editor's Favorite in the August, 2015 issue of Allure magazine.  "These polishes do for your nails what a great BB cream and highlighter do for your skin.  The beige evens nails, the sheer white brightens tips, and together they look like you're wearing nothing at all."  I totally agree.  There are four perfectors; lavender, pink, nude and mauve.  You use them alone or together to get a perfect color and tone that matches your nail bed.  I've included some info below on this and I can totally recommend it!

The Brochure says:

"The NAKED MANICURE system works by instantly correcting cosmetic nail problems and delivering therapeutic benefits to nails long term. INSTANT RESULTS are obtained through the use of the NAKED MANICURE Perfectors. The six Perfectors use optical diffusers, keratin fillers, micronized reflective color pigments and micro thin film formers to create an ultra sheer veil which ensures that the natural vibrancy of the nail is enhanced rather than concealed. The Perfectors contain a proprietary blend of finely ground pigments, vitamins and botanicals that also help to promote micro-circulation and oxygen exchange. THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS are delivered through a meticulous blend of vitamins, proteins and botanicals carefully infused in the NAKED MANICURE  Treatments and Perfectors that help improve the condition and appearance of the nail."

 How to do the manicure:
  1. Prep the nail by shaping, gently buffing and cleaning up cuticles.
  2. Apply Naked manicure Naked Base (basecoat).
  3. Select the Naked Manicure Perfector first coat. Use lavender for discoloration. If layering more than one shade, use the brighter/stronger shade first.
  4. Apply the selected Naked Manicure Perfector second coat. If between shades, the second coat is for the color that softens or tones the base color.
  5. Apply Naked Manicure Tip Perfector along free edge of the nail to brighten, fill and finish.
  6. Activate Naked Manicure Satin Seal by gently rolling the bottle between hands for twenty seconds.
  7. Apply one coat of Naked Manicure Satin Seal to blend, blur and seal the look creating the closest ever natural nail finish (compatible with fast drops).
  8. For an optional shiny finish, apply one coat of Naked Manicure Glossy Seal over Satin Seal (compatible with fast drops.)

Artificial Nails - Acrylics vs. Gels

Acrylic Nails are applied by mixing a liquid with a powder and the mixture is then brushed on to the nails.  The product hardens as it is exposed to the air.  There may be a strong odor during the application, but it isn't harmful as long as the room has good ventilation.  As your nails grow, you will need to have the new area "filled", generally every two to three weeks.  They are removed by soaking your hands in nail polish remover for 15 minutes.

Gel Nails are applied by brushing the gel onto your nails.  After each coat you must put your nails under ultraviolet (UV) light for up to two minutes to "cure" (harden) the gel.  Nail gels have no odor.  As with acrylics, the nail growth needs to be filled every 2 -3 weeks.  The gel removes easily with nail polish remover.  Gels come in colors, so there is no need to "polish" and this is making them very popular as the color is very durable.  The nails are also more flexible.  You do have to "start over" (remove all the gel) if you want to change the color.

Here are some TIPS:

Never peel off your artificial nails.  Peeling can remove the top layer of your nails, making them look terrible and vulnerable to infections.

Make sure the technician applying the nails is experienced.  Inexperienced techs can file your nail plate too thin and damage the nail.

Make sure you see a clean salon and disinfectant being used between clients.  Both you and the technician should wash your hands before she starts working on them

Leave your cuticles alone.  Don't let anyone at the nail salon cut or push back your cuticles.  Breaking the seal between your fingernail and nail bed can lead to infections.

You should never feel any pain after your nails have been applied.  If you develop an itch or rash around your fingertips (or your eyes, face, or neck if you have touched your face), you might check with your doctor to see if your are sensitive to any of the ingredients.

Helping your Brittle Splitting Nails

Onychoschizia is the medical term for splitting fingernails. The term onychoschizia includes splitting, brittle, soft or thin nails. Onychoschizia is more common in women. Only very rarely are internal disease or vitamin deficiencies the reason (iron deficiency is the most common).

If the fingernails split, but the toenails are strong, then the cause is likely something you are doing. Basically brittle nails can be divided into dry and brittle (too little moisture) and soft and brittle (often too much moisture). The usual cause is repeated wetting and drying of the fingernails. This makes them dry and brittle. This is often worse in low humidity and in the winter (dry heat).

The best treatment is to apply lotions containing alpha-hydroxy acids or lanolin to the nails after first soaking nails in water for 5 minutes. Wearing cotton gloves when performing household chores that involve getting the hands wet is very helpful in preventing brittle nails. If your nails are soft, they may be getting too much moisture or being damaged by chemicals such as detergents, cleaning fluids and acetone based nail polish removers .

Be gentle to you nails. Shape and file your nails with a very fine file and round the tips in a gentle curve. Daily filing of snags or irregularities helps to prevent further breakage or splitting. Avoid metal instruments on the nail surface to push back the cuticle. If the nails are "buffed" do this in the same direction as the nail grows and not in a "back and forth" motion because this can cause nail splitting.

Start your 'Tween off right!

Help her develop habits that will last a lifetime.
Aging beautifully starts when we are very young with good eating habits and a good hygiene routine. So developing good skin and hair care habits should begin early. When playing with Mommy's make-up becomes "when can I wear make-up", it's time to commence encouraging grooming habits that will last a lifetime.

Whatever age you set as the proper time for using make-up, give it a good six month head start by letting her demonstrate her developing maturity by twice daily face washing, using body lotions with SPF and  lip balms. Showing you she will take responsibility for herself in these small items will help you to measure her willingness to maintain her skin once she is allowed to use more grown-up cosmetics. After all, if fried fast foods are her snack of choice and make-up is allowed to remain on overnight, it is very likely she will develop acne or other skin problems. She may not thank you for the strict regimen right away, but she will as a teen when her skin remains clear and when she is turning sixty and still looks fifty!

Make it a fun experience and a challenge with a reward. Shop together for her first "grown-up" products. Discuss the importance of skin and hair care. It is hard for someone so young to imagine herself "old" (and remember even you are old to her), so you might want to find a few pictures that demonstrate women with older, uncared for skin and a few with skin that has obviously been well-cared for. Challenge her and offer the reward:

"You are growing up so beautifully. I know you want to start wearing make-up and you will be allowed to [..when...]. It is my job to teach you as you grow and your job to show me how responsible you can be. We will start you with [...]. If you can show me you will wash you face every morning and every night without being reminded, and you will [...] for the next [...] months, then I think you will be ready to begin using [...] ."

Be sure to get products that work well for young skin. Go for the natural products in a good quality face wash such as DermaE's Tea Tree and E Face Wash with it's natural antibacterial ingredients. Remind her it is better to rub gently for a little longer than to scrub hard quickly and to blot her face dry.

Moisturizers should be used daily. This can be part of the shopping fun. There are lots of high-quality natural moisturizers that are naturally scented. Let her choose her first "signature scent".  Smart Spa by Qtica it great! Choose a good lip balm; one with excellent moisturizing and SPF qualities like does have the "candylicious" flavors, but these are infused with Beeswax, coconut oil and vitamin E.

Finally, and most important, encourage her good eating habits. Start packing her lunch with a few carrot sticks instead of two cookies. Let her go to the grocery store to help you pick the healthy snacks. Stress the importance of eight glasses of water a day for a healthy looking skin. She should come away from this experience feeling good about herself and you will know she is on the road to a lifetime of healthy skin care.

Causes (and Fixes) for Dry Skin

Your skin is your body's defense against the elements.  Sun, wind and cold can leave skin dry and itchy, but you don't need to hide it, just replenish it.

Winter Weather - when the temperature drops so does the humidity level.  The dryer the air, the more parched the skin.  Turing up the heat doesn't help...indoor heating strips even more moisture from the air - and your skin.  FIX:  Install a humidifier in your home to keep air moist. Set humidity at a constant 45% to 55%, and the temperature at a balmy 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Steamy Showers - it may soothe your body, but it won't do your skin any dries out the natural oils in your skin more quickly.  Standing under that hot spray long enough to belt out your favorite tune is also a no-no. The longer you linger in the shower, the more you dry out your skin.
FIX:  Dial down the shower temperature to lukewarm, and keep showers short. Five minutes is enough to get clean without over-drying. Save the singing for your car.

Moisture-Robbing Soaps - Don't put just any bar of soap into your shower dish -- they're not all the same. Wash with a harsh soap and you'll send your skin's natural moisture barrier straight down the drain.  FIX:  Use a mild, fragrance-free soap that moisturizes as it cleanses.

The Rub-Down - You don't need to scrub to get your skin clean.  Toss that old notion, along with your scrubby sponge.  Frictions strips the skin and enhances the dryness.  FIX: Use you hands or a soft washcloth.  They will get your skin just as clean without roughing up your skin.

The Towel Rub-down - When drying off, pat your skin gently. Drying completely strips away the moisture your shower left on your skin.  FIX:  Leave skin a little moist, and then apply a moisturizing lotion while the skin is still damp to seal in that moisture.  Lotions and creams containing ingredients such as soothing ceramide for sensitive skin, or urea, lactic acid or  dimethicone for very dry skin will make a big difference.  You might want to try Cuccio Naturale products.

Aging - as hormone levels change over the years, skin becomes parched and thin.  FIX:  you can't turn back time, but you can minimize aging skin changes.  Start each morning with a generous rub of a rich face and body cream. To minimize wrinkles while you relieve dryness, look for ingredients such as alpha-hydroxy acids and retinol.  Hempz Age Defying Herbal Body Moisturizer is a great one!

A little Bohemian Style!

We've talked all week about hair repair.  Now that your hair is in top-notch form, what about a new style?  Or maybe just a new take on your old style.  It's always great to freshen things up (and if, despite yours and ours best efforts at repair, you still need to trim the ends) and give your style a little pizazz!  Long, loose waves, center parts, and a little bit messy, fall fashion is leaning toward an updated 70's bohemian style and we've got some of the great looks to share with you!

70's inspired waves with a bit of volume at the crown.
Sprtiz on a volume spray, set with a large
barrel curling iron and brush out the curl.  Simple!
Soft, romantic waves fall gently from a middle
part.  Set the hair in hot rollers, then bush out.  Work
a few drops of oil (see our Right Oil for you article)
through the hair to add shine!

Incredibly sexy texture was created by
crimping the hair all over.  A few small, tight
braids were created around the face, then
released to add even more textural interest. A
light hair spray & shine mist set the look!

Ally Answers...I'm a Head Case!

I continually have problems with dandruff.  As soon as I quit using a dandruff shampoo, it's back within a week.  Can you help me?  Joanne K.

Those pesky flakes can be a real problem, but there are ways to keep it under control.  First a little lesson to understand the problem.  The combination of increased sebum production and an increase in the amount of skin micro-organisms create the perfect environment for the scalp skin cells to turnover very quickly which results in dandruff.  There is no "cure" but frequent washing and using a scalp toner will help keep the scalp clean and clear.  Using a good, professional shampoo is essential.  I can recommend Matrix Biolage SCALPSYNC Anti-Dandruff Shampoo.  The Pyrithion Zinc helps control dandruff and relives the itch.  It helps keep the skin of the scalp in balance so skin cells don't turn over as rapidly.  There is also Medicueticals Dandruff Scalp Treatment Kit which works for really difficult cases.  There are three products in the kit:  TheraRX Antibacterial Scalp Wash, X-Folate Persisten Danruff Shampoo and Therapeutic Scalp & Hair Treatment Rinse.  This might be the perfect one for you to get started.

Time for a Deep Hair Treatment

Conditioners and leave-ins are great for everyday and for maintaining healthy hair.  However, if summer sun, chlorine and other stressors have left your hair looking tired, dry and damaged, it's time to get serious with an intensive hair treatment.  Plan to spend at least a half-hour on this.

Apply your treatment product to your freshly washed, towel dried hair.  Work through your hair, paying special attention to the ends.  Pile hair on top of your head and wrap hair in plastic wrap.  Your body-generated heat will help the product penetrate.  Now, relax for 15 minutes. Then, rinse hair thoroughly.  Comb through hair and let it dry naturally if you have time.  If you must blow-dry, then be sure to do so on a cool to warm setting, never hot!

Great treatments we recommend:

Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor has 19 essential amino acids, the building block of hair, and repairs from the cuticle to the cortex.  It is safe for colored hair and is perfect for very dry, damaged hair.

It's a 10 Miracle Hair Mask not only repairs, but seals the hair, giving it strength and shine.  It also has thermal protectors.  Really great for those with split ends.

Peter Coppola Blondest Keratin Concept - Color Command Mask is amazing for colored-blonde hair.  Blonde hair can look over-processed and brittle if it is not maintained.  This product, with both keratin and azulene will give blondes a silk-soft look.

IT&LY Riflessi has the perfect masque for those that do not color their hair or whose hair will not support permanent hair color, but who want to enhance their natural color as they deep condition and repair their hair.  Great for any natural color, these work especially well for brunettes, reds, black and grey

Wash your hair with what? Co-wash? Oil Cleanse? Pre-poo?

Image result for shampoo
People with fragile or naturally curly hair have been co-washing for a long time.  Their hair needs the extra care this more gentle method provides.  It's soap free, suds-free, sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium chloride free.  Some normal shampoos can also remove natural lipids and may result in the loss of moisture and hair color vibrancy.  If your hair needs extra care, these types of products can be perfect for you.
  • Co-washing - it cleanses and conditions in one easy step.  It's the perfect solution for active people who wash their hair frequently.  These products remove build-up and sweat without stripping the natural oils.  It's not sudsy but feels more creamy.  Try Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner for Curly Hair or for Fine Hair.  If you have color-treated or curly hair, the Deva Concepts brand of products may be the one for you!
  • Pre-pooing - its for those with coarse hair.  This step is essential to maintain the hair's strength and quality. The tighter the texture, the more fragile the hair.  Pre-pooing is the conditioning step prior to cleansing.  Minardi's Pre-Wash Therapy is a great one!
  • Oil-Cleansing - it removes direct and debris at the scalp level while exfoliating.  It's feel is a lather sensation like shampoo, but with a soft, fresh finish.  L'anza's Keratin Healing Oil Cleansing Cream or Alfaparf's Precious Oil Tradition Anti-Frizz Oil Shampoo are perfect choices to try.

The right oil for your hair.

There has been an explosion in recent years of oils for your hair.  This proliferation of different botanical oils can be with oils, a little goes a long way!  Oils provide extra moisture, shine and help detangle.

Applying the oil correctly will avoid a greasy look.  The best way is to put a few drops in the palm of your hand, then rub you hands together to spread the oil.  Run your oiled hands down the length of the hair starting at the mid-shaft and, focusing on the ends, work the oil through this part of your hair.

Below is a list of some of the more popular oils and what they are used for.
  • Coconut Oil - thinning hair, strengthening hair.
  • Argan Oil - Moisturizing, Anti-aging, Nourishing
  • Tamanu Oil - Curly hair, anti-frizz, detangling
  • Apricot Oil - Moisturizing, protecting as it seals in moisture
  • Camelina Oil - Protective, Restorative

Goldwell Elixir Versatile Oil Treatment is a combination of argan and tamanu oils.  It is very effective as a regenerative and moisturizing treatment.

Macadamia Professional Weightless Moisture Dry Oil Micro Mist is ultra-lightweight.  It is perfect for thin or damaged hair that needs an extra dose of oil each day to keep it looking great.  So is Kuene So Pure Moroccan Argan Oil Light, which uses both Argan Oil and Apricot Oil to strengthen hair.

Scruples Renewal Hair Therapy Polish using argan oil in an alcohol free formula that give you an incredible shine and eliminates frizz.  This works great on any type hair, but especially on medium to thick hair.

Matrix Oil Wonders is perfect for color treated hair.  It uses Egyptian Hibiscus oil, adapted from the ingredient used to protect hair from the harsh Egyptian climate.

Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine Intense is for coarse hair.  It is a super-rich oil, silicone free, that uses a combination of coconut, apricot, camelina and coriander oils to really strengthen hair.

Kenra Daily Defense Oil is lightweight and is perfect for those who use a flat iron daily as it contains marula oil that acts as a heat defense, plus camelina, coconut and apricot oils for strength and shine.

August is "Summer Repair" month at BCC

Summer sun & fun can do a lot of damage!  Hair gets dry and frizzy, skin is parched, nails may be weak from so much water time or chipped from gardening and your cosmetics may need a little review.

As we begin out August "Summer Repair" series this month, we will be focusing each week on a different category - Hair, Skin, Nails, Cosmetics - to bring you information on what ingredients are best for your problem and tips on how to correct problem areas.  Plus each week we will have products for the category on sale!

We love answering your specific questions, as well as providing general information.  BCC has licensed cosmetologists as our customer service staff, plus we have "Ally Answers" column on this blog. (You can e-mail Ally at  Using for all your beauty needs means more than click & purchase, not knowing for sure if the product is outdated or purchased on the "grey" market.  Big box stores can't tell you what you need or how to use it.  That's the big difference at BCC!

Sherry Says...

Looking for heat protection that actually works? Well, look no further! The Matrix Total Results So Long Damage Iron Tamer does the job!  My hair looks smooth, healthy & shiny without adding any additional products.  I have naturally wavy hair and with this I just added some in my hair and blew it straight.  The smell is delightfully kind of fruity.  My hair stayed manageable all day. This product gives long-lasting smoothness and style memory while it eliminates frizz.  My-coworkers commented how “Fabulous my hair looked!” and what girl doesn’t love to hear that!

Reuzel Pomades...New at BCC

To all of you old school gents and gals out there, meet Reuzel! Reuzel is Holland's finest pomades.  These pomades were created by the Scumbag Barbers of Rotterdam at Schorem's Barber Shop. The Schorem barbers are an eclectic mix of  greasers, rockers, bikers, psychobillys, ruffians and other fine gentleman scumbags.  These barbers go above and beyond simple haircuts. They dedicate their lives to classic man styles like the butch, Flattop, Razor Fade and High and Tight. The Scumbag barbers don't follow trends, they stick to being absolutely perfect in cuts that have proven classy through all decades.

The Ruezel pomades currently come in three different kinds. Each pomade looks "scummy" dirty, is tin and has the infamous pig smack in the center. Fun Fact! - Reuzel in Dutch actually means lard. So the hefty pig comes from its lard nature and because in the beginning of pomade the hold and texture came from pig lard. Don't worry though the pig is just for history - the pomades do not contain pig products, they are water, oil or beeswax based. Each pomade comes in three different sizes. The try it size, 1.3oz, the like it size, 4oz, and the love it size, 12oz.  The twist off tops can be lightly flimsy. The threads will bend so gentlemen BE GENTLE!

A huge pomade favorite that they make is their ReuzelGrease Heavy Hold. This pink can is perfect for the thick and unruly man. Use this pomade if you are looking to do styles like very tall pompadours or for all styles if you're sasquatch. This pomade comes out pretty easy for being a heavy hold pomade. It is not a ton of work but you can already feel some of the all-day hold it will have. The scent for this pomade is a light bubble gum which may sound slightly girly but we promise you it is NOT! One cool thing about this pomade is that when you rub it through your hands it feels more thick and creamy. Of course there is a little waxy-ness to it but not too much for a heavy hold. Many people who've tried this product said they were surprised at how easy it was to apply without compromising any hold.

Next on their list is the green piggy. The Reuzel Grease Medium Hold is really a medium to light hold. For the scent on this one people could not pin point it! We had multiple people smell it and while no one said it was bad, no one knew what it was. We got answers saying bubble gum, apple, melon, musk and more. Like the pink piggy this pomade is beeswax and oil based. We love this pomade because even though it is wax based there is not a bunch of tugging and pulling as you comb back the hair. The green tin has a medium amount of shine to it. One great thing with this pomade is second day styling. It is absolutely fantastic. Just a quick warning if you live in a super warm climate, this pomade may not be the best. It has been known to lose a little height in heat - it was created in the Netherlands.

Last, but definetly not least, is Reuzel's only water-based pomade. Being water-based this red tin says it will provide the most shine to your pomp. The "shine" is more of a wet look than traditional shine though. Still very attractive! Reuzel Water Soluble HighSheen does not dry or harden throughout the day, making restyling a breeze! This pomade gives such amazing control that it could cut down on your average style time and restyle time. Even though this pomade is great for restyling it still has a fairly strong hold. Don't underestimate red piggy! Reuzel says this pomade has a butterscotch scent. IRL, it kind of does. If you know it's butterscotch you can smell the butterscotch, if not it smells light and sweet.

There hace been so many different hypes and rumors about these pomades floating around. BCC believes each and every pomade Ruezel has made lived up to its hyped up image. Plus, if you ever happen to be in the Rotterdam area of the Netherlands,  go check out the world's best barbers!
